He arrived on their front doorstep and said he'd take them to their missing sister; then he led them down railroad tracks and, they remembered, to the mouth of the shallow grave that held her dead body. But did E. D. Johnson, who told police he saw Virginia walking near the railroads tracks on the day her family last saw her, rape, stab and strangle her, and leave her lifeless body in the grave on the edge of a woods in Richland County SC?

Even though she'd followed him down the tracks and, later, heard him confess to committing the crime, Virginia's 15-year-old sister, Lucille, thought E. D. Johnson was too old and infirm to have committed the murder, and police records do not indicate that he was a person of interest at the time - nearly 55 years ago now, in April of 1964. It’s officially Richland County’s oldest cold case.
But did police even care?

A mere "those were different times" fails to disperse the ghosts of ancient prejudice, and wounds cannot heal until their causes are found and exposed to the light.
Is it too late to find a solution? Over half a century ago an African-American girl met her fate one bright spring day. In addition to Johnson, a man who was a prisoner confessed to the killing; his confession, too, was deemed false. And her family considered a young man who was her teenage sweetheart - he had given Virginia a ring, which was found to be missing when her body was discovered - to be a possibility.
But it's hard when the police don't do their due diligence. It sounds as if, clearly, that was the case here.

A Battle Creek police detective thinks he found her killer days ago, buried in a Texas cemetery.
Marshall, 41, has been a law enforcement officer for 22 years, including 13 years with the Battle Creek Police Department. He spent spent a year working on the Barrus homicide before arriving at the Travis County International Cemetery in Austin, Texas, to watch the exhumation of the body of Richard Compton.
"There is satisfaction that it might be the guy," Detective Scott Marshall said. "As I am standing there watching them exhume him, it is a very satisfactory feeling that knowing all the work has led you to that moment. And you are surrounded by people who are all just as excited as you are that you may have that suspect right here and you may be able to close a case."
Compton matches the description of the man seen leaving the restaurant. He was friends with the original suspect and had access to his truck.

So, almost all my orders today were terrible. AR took a dive, even the passable orders were all on the low end of what I’ll accept. I was about to give up when a $17 order came through. Not amazing, but better than anything else I’d gotten. It was for Denny’s- okay, no problem.
I get to the parking lot and it’s blocked off by cop cars and there are two cops with big ass guns telling me I can’t come through and Denny’s is going to be closed for “a while.” Order gets canceled, obviously.
Found out later that it’s because one of the murder suspects that escaped the county prison earlier this week was thought to have been spotted at the adjacent hotel. They evacuated the hotel and Denny’s- apparently didn’t find the murder suspect, though. Good times.
