[Terence-y Science News] "The Earthโ€™s rotation is changing speed.."

*late Submission Statement: As a long time Terence fan, I'm always keeping a lookout for articles that I could easily hear Terence referencing today in one of his latest talks. I have no doubt he'd be all over this one assuming his Time Wave theory evolved into something a little less terminal..

https://www.sciencefocus.com/planet-earth/earth-rotation-speed/

COPIED ARTICLE TEXT:

What speed is Earthโ€™s rotation?

We define a day as 86,400 seconds, or 24 hours โ€“ the time it takes for Earth to rotate once. However, the Earth doesnโ€™t rotate perfectly uniformly. Usually, the Earthโ€™s rotation is actually slowing down so that the length of the day increases by about 1.8 milliseconds per century, on average. This means that 600 million years ago a day lasted only 21 hours.

Advertisement The variation in day length is due to several factors, including the tidal effects of the Moon and Sun, core-mantle coupling inside the Earth, and the overall distribution of mass on the planet. Seismic activity, glaciation, the weather, the oceans and the Earthโ€™s magnetic field may also affect the length of the day.

In 2020 scientists made a startling discovery. They found that, instead of slowing down, the Earth has started to spin faster. It is now spinning faster than at any time in the last 50 years. In fact, the shortest 28 days on record all occurred during 2020.

Advertisement As yet, scientists are not entirely sure what is causing this increase in Earthโ€™s rotation rate, but some have suggested it could be due to the melting of glaciers during the 20th Century, or the accumulation of large quantities of water in northern hemisphere reservoirs. However, experts predict that this speeding up is a temporary effect and the Earth will start slowing down again in the future.

But, for now, should we be worried? Although it will have no effect on our daily lives, there could be serious implications for technology such as GPS satellites, smartphones, computers and communication networks, all of which rely on extremely accurate timing systems. But such problems are ultimately surmountable, perhaps simply by subtracting a leap second rather than adding one.

So no, we shouldnโ€™t be worried โ€“ unless the shortening of the day is attributable to human activity.

Terence changed my life.

He was one of the first people I listened to and he was the author of the first book I had willingly read in years. Iโ€™m a 21 year old kid who grew up a fairly decent life nothing out of the usual parents split up mom had a few bad boyfriends dad remarried etc. my life was pretty bland, I was what you would call a โ€œpopularโ€ kid in high school who played football and who most people knew and wanted to be friends with. I was very ego driven and also would come to find out after 21 years of living that my abundance of energy and inability to function normally in mundane situations would finally boil down to a form of ADHD. I found this out about 3 months after my 21st realizing that I canโ€™t even sit down longer than 10 minutes to play video games which was a hobby Iโ€™ve had for my whole life, I loved pc gaming and started realizing that I couldnโ€™t even sit down to do it anymore I had to always be doing something. Now with the pandemic hitting and being locked In my house at my parents I was slowly losing my mind and once the pandemic was over and I was finally getting back into the world I turned 21 in July and went on a bender for about 3-4 weeks of drinking. This wasnโ€™t a usual kind of drinking either it was more of your throwing back a 5th of vodka ever other day type of drinking. I blew my right shoulder out when hammered and put a hole in my wall in my new house that my friend was kind enough to let me live in for very cheap. So after finding all these things out and looking at the life I was living I started to become very depressed and then found Terence on YouTube and from there the rest was history I read food of the gods and then a week later I took my first trip and it changed my life forever. I know this story is worthless to most and has almost no meaning to anyone I just figured I would come pay my respects to the man who would go on to change my life forever even though heโ€™s been gone for almost as long as Iโ€™ve been alive. I hope you are out there Terence I hope we all get to see you again in a different life.

Terence Mckenna's Voice changing over the years

I got into Terence a few years ago, maybe 2016. One of the first things I noticed was how slowly and deliberately he spoke. I'm now revisiting him, but trying to find videos I've never heard before, which I'm finding. But it seems he is speaking less slowly. Were the videos I found a few years ago slowed down by the poster? Are they paced regularly now? Am I just used to his speech at this point? Does it depend on his level of stonedness per lecture video? Is time speeding up? My question is, What exactly is going on?

Young American Directors Worth Watching (Let's Make a List)

It's a bit depressing that all of the American auteur directors of the 1970s indie film boom (Scorsese, Schrader, Spielberg, Coppola, Allen, Lynch, and etc.) are dead or nearing death, while the American auteur directors who made their names in the indie boom of the 1990s (Tarantino, Linklater, Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach, Steven Soderbergh, Spike Lee, Darren Aronofsky, Coen Brothers, and etc.) are nearing retirement age (albeit, many have no plans to retire).

As you scan the landscape of current American cinema, it's incredibly difficult to find any American directors under 50 who can take the place of these last 2 generations. There are many talented young directors, but very few seem to have the clout to get bigger budget stuff made. Obviously, this is partly due to how much the studio system has changed. Studios have started putting money into streaming, while also focusing primarily on big budget blockbusters, meaning that there really isn't the same amount of money in American indie filmmaking that there was in the 90s.

So let's take stock of the American directors under 50 worth watching (sorry Sofia Coppola and Sean Baker, you barely missed the cutoff). I'll list all the ones I can think of, and you all please fill in who I might be missing. As a note, I don't necessarily like all these directors, they just seem to be the people who are getting work and making some amount of impact. Personally, it doesn't seem to me like any of them will rise to the level of power to make what they want in Hollywood like some of the 90s auteurs, but you never know:

  • Trey Edward Shults (33): A24 director, which means he's done horror (It Comes At Night was a solid, low budget, riff on 1970s Jon Carpenter/Wes Craven). I haven't seen his other stuff (Krishna, Waves), but I probably should as they got good reviews.
  • Safdie Brothers (35/37): Came up in the mumblecore movement of the 2000s (one of their first, Daddy Longlegs, is on Criterion and is great), but unlike most mumble core directors, had the talent to outlast that and stick around (biggest films: Uncut Gems, Good Time).
  • Ari Aster (35): A24 horror kid. Unlike Eggers, seems stuck in horror (Hereditary, Midsommer) either due to interest or necessity. Has said his next may be a comedy.
  • Lena Dunham (35): Mumblecore adjacent (Tiny Furniture), seemed the next big thing for 5 minutes, burned out on the altar of twitter and social media. Doesn't seem interested in

Terence said that he felt, things had to get worse, before they got better. We need to use the current crisis' in the world as catalysts for positive change and growth, not submit to them and devolve with them.

In "Search for The Original Tree of Knowledge" at ~01:42:00 he says "You see, I, uh, we are not, uh, psilocybin is the easy way to awaken. You know, take a, take a psychedelic plant and have an experience and get your act together, but the future is full of sledgehammers. Itโ€™s not going, we're not, we're not going to end with a whimper, it's going to end with a series of thuds and bangs. It could begin almost anytime. I mean we could get a hot muggy day in Mexico City this summer, and a million people would die.

This thing in Los Angeles is a wake up call. It is going to get uglier and more chaotic and more crazy, there is going to be more starvation, more fascism, more dictatorship. This is, unless we do something! Until we do something."

Transcript

All of Tree of Knowledge is worth listening to, of course, however given recent events this particular section came to mind. I think what we should try to take from this is that we can make progress from this pain. Necessity is the root of invention, crisis' precipitate change. I personally don't think things HAVE to get worse, but it sort of goes without saying that unless we act, things will continue to get worse; I don't think that because it "goes without saying" or is "obvious" we shouldn't say it, though. If our "enemies" are fascists, dictatorships, abusive opportunists, violent rioters, looters, killers, etc,...we need to do what we CAN against those people. We need to rally together, find our allies, and continue to spread the truth as we see it. I don't mean just the truth as we see it about psychedelic awakening, but all cultural exchange. A sort of analogy we can use is that bad cultural epidemics, are comparable to "bad" trips; they may be scary, but if we survive, we can learn from them. We must let no lesson go wasted.

Just my thoughts, stay safe everyone. I highly recommend listening to all of Tree of Knowledge if you haven't, or again if it's been a while. https://www.asktmk.com/talks is an incredible resource for text transcripts of Terence's talks, as well.

I've made my own rating system similar to Boxrec

My interest in boxing got renewed in 2017 with the AJ-Wlad fight. Like many new fans, I found it daunting to figure out who was the best, and which belts to pay attention to, and how to balance all the criteria people judge fighters on.

As a baseball fan, I've always paid attention to advanced metrics. So I was naturally drawn to Boxrec as a new boxing fan. The more I learned about the sport, the more disenchanted I became with their rating system.

Currently, Jimmy McLarnin the second best fighter of all time, P4P. Holman Williams is seventh. Sammy Mandell is fifteenth. Among active fighters, they have Briedis, Wilder, Callum Smith, and Ugas in their top 10. I could go on - but I think you get the point.

I like what they're trying to do - but I think their rankings can often be nonsensical.

About a year or two ago, they changed their formula so that when a fighter loses, all his previous fights decrease in value. So, for instance, when AJ lost to Usyk - he's now, all of a sudden, not as good when he beat Wlad in 2017. I thought this decision was stupid. There is an ebb and flow to a fighter's career. It makes no sense to change how good someone is across time and space based on an individual result. A fighter is only as good as they last guy he beat. He can be great in one fight, and then washed three fights later. That happens.

So I set out to make my own rating system.

Mine isn't "perfect", by any means - but it seems to track better with other rankings I've seen. Here's my top 10 P4P list (compared to the average ranking between Boxrec, ESPN, TBRB, and The Ring):

  1. Canelo Alvarez (1.00)
  2. Terence Crawford (2.50)
  3. Naoya Inoue (6.75)
  4. Oleksandyr Usyk (3.25)
  5. Roman Gonzalez (13.33)
  6. Juan Francisco Estrada (8.75)
  7. Vasyl Lomachenko (15.00)
  8. Tyson Fury (6.25)
  9. Josh Taylor (7.33)
  10. Errol Spence Jr. (5.66)

Now, my rater doesn't strictly match how I'd personally rank them. I'd rank Usyk 2nd, for instance, and I think Chocolatito is a bit too high. But, overall, I think it does alright.

For anyone interested, my all time top 20 is:

  1. Sugar Ray Robinson
  2. Muhammad Ali
  3. Floyd Mayweather Jr
  4. Joe Louis
  5. Roy Jones Jr
  6. Julio Cesar Chavez
  7. Henry Armstrong
  8. Willie Pep
  9. Archie Moore
  10. Sugar Ray Leonard
  11. Manny Pacquiao
  12. Jose Napoles
  13. Marvin Hagler
  14. Carlos Monzon
  15. Carlos Ortiz
  16. Ezzard Charles
  17. Sam Langford
  18. Alexis Arguello
  19. Evander Holyfield
  20. Roberto Duran

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Do you support Imprison Azam Baki?

Azam Baki is the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). He and his team investigate alleged corrupt individuals and companies. Someone in his position must be cleaner than clean, and whiter than white, but he compromised himself with his purchase of shares back in 2015 and 2016.

Anyone who works in a private company is aware that there is a basic set of rules for employees and members of the board. Those who work in the civil service have to observe a code of conduct.

Azam had previously admitted that he had allowed his brother, Nasir, to use his trading account to buy millions of shares in two public-listed companies. He was in potential breach of Section 25(4) of the Securities Central Depository Act 1991 (Sicda), which states that a trading account must be opened in the name of the beneficial owner or authorised nominee.

On Jan 18, the Securities Commission (SC) said that after investigating, it could not โ€œconclusively establishโ€ that a breach had occurred. After a public outcry, and allegations of โ€œsitting on the fenceโ€, the SC changed its tune the next day and said it had discovered no wrongdoing because it found no proxy trading, as Azam carried out the share transactions himself.

Following the first SC press statement, the Cabinet met to discuss the Azam case.

Meanwhile, Azam also refused to appear before the Parliamentary Select Committee for Agencies under the Prime Ministerโ€™s Department to get to the bottom of the affair.

The Azam Baki case has been badly handled from the time the allegations first appeared in public. Economist Edmund Terence Gomez had resigned from the MACCโ€™s Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel in December in protest against the failure of the MACC to deal with his request to investigate Azamโ€™s share dealings.

rough night, the down swing might be here boys after this heater we have been on. let's hope to break that shit ASAP. As always, the video is unlisted so do not like or sub. And if you ever feel like my stuff has made you a better player then I will leave my paypal below!

I missed going over a value play, i think advija is playable if he starts. But don't love it

Early thoughts, MEM news is REALLY fucking important. if JJJ and adams are out then i would assume tillman starts i really fucking like him even in a tough matchup. it's a wait and see approach basically. And then brunson is a must. And then boucher is an absolute lock and then terence mann looks like a really fucking good value play as well. then jokic looks good. think we start with that for now. but MEM news is kinda big because tillman could be really good value. If you REALLY want to play a hornet, then rozier is the only one im considering. Also, porzingis could rest. And then if ayton is out, lock and load mcgee

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjWdXuu9ssM

Edit: in the next few days Iโ€™m really going to consider quitting CSGO and apart of that reason will be weighed on the fact of making a discord. Iโ€™ll keep you guys updated

Edit: if you guys need someone who is min price. then brandon boston is a fair min price guy for salary relief FYI

Edit: guys, stay away from MIA all together. hate the matchup

Edit: metu starting. wtf lol. im off bagley and davis

Edit: vincent is the only MIA guy i would play

Edit: current core is, reggie jackson, brunson, boucher, jokic, mann

Edit: ayton went through shoot around. i think he plays.

Edit: with reddish not limited. i am off TLC

Edit: only have boucher from the first games and waiting for MEM news. core might change

Edit: core is staying the same. but if for some reason ayton gets ruled out u guys are going to have to figure out a pivot to get mcgee in

Edit: armoni starting. like him

Edit: all MEM guys in. off all of them

Edit: is pj tucker just lebron now?

Edit: barton and gordon didn't go through shootaround. if they are both out i really like bones hyland and campazzo

Edit: seth curry out, korkmaz starting. think hes a decent value play at min price.

Edit: i have marcus morris in utility in case ayton gets ruled out.

Edit: barton ruled out. i would expect gordon to be out to. bones and campazzo look like great plays

Edit: armoni brooks hurt. im so fucking

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat
