Is there any literary or cultural significance as to why the Trojan War lasted this long, or is the timeframe simply a way to convey "this was a very long and taxing war"?
It seems very likely that Joseph Smith was well acquainted with people that were uneducated and superstitious. He knew how to get them to pay him to look for buried treasures by claiming to have supernatural powers.
The church minimizes Smiths work as a treasure hunter for pay, while using his "seer stone". This is understandable as it is very difficult to portray this in any way other than fraud.
His mother said:
"A short time before the house was completed, a man by the name of Josiah Stoal, came from Chenango County, New York, with the view of getting Joseph to assist him in digging for a silver mine1. He came for Joseph on account of having heard that he possessed certain keys, by which he could discern things invisible to the natural eye."

Joseph worked with various people that were searching and digging for buried treasure. He did so by using the same stone he later claimed to be able to translate the Book of of Mormon with. He did it often enough that even people that lived some distance away had heard of his supernatural claims.

Seer Stones and seers appear to have been a common con from Josephs time and place. That does not change the fact that it was a con, and Smith was apparently better at this con than most. This method of enriching himself illuminates how his mind worked, and gives us some insight into his character.
Smith was clearly intelligent. He understood how the con worked. He must have also understood that if he had true supernatural abilities he would not need to defraud superstitious neighbors. He could simply have used his abilities to guide his own family to treasures and they could dig them up themselves.
