I was listening to episode 198, the interview with Ted Nasmith, and Ted mentioned one Alex Lewis (Tolkien Society Chair from 1988-1992). He described Lewis as a jack of all trades, a writer, composer, and editor. He also mentioned that he had written a book, The Tale of Gondolin, that sought to fill in the gaps after Tuor arrives at, and then later escapes from Gondolin. Nasmith specifically said that it is hard for a reader to tell where Tolkien’s writings end and Lewis’s began. With a claim like that from someone well-regarded in the Tolkien world, that made me raise my eyebrow. I had never heard of Alex Lewis, so I did some simple google-fu.
There is a review from Hobbit.ca Rare books - The Tale of Gondolin from 2010. There were only 50 copies of the Tale of Gondolin made, and all are considered collectors items and go for as much as $1000 for a copy. Supposedly, Priscilla Tolkien gave Lewis verbal permission to write this work, but obviously the Tolkien Estate does not condone fanfiction.
I am really interested to read this book, and probably never will. Whether it is top-notch or sub-par, I am genuinely curious. How much liberty does Lewis take? Did he really emulate Tolkien’s style well? Did Ted Nasmith actually read this at some point? Is Alex Lewis well-received in Tolkien circles, or do people think of him more like David Day?
I would love to hear Shawn and Alan discuss this. I know this may be controversial to discuss, maybe even impossible to review. There is a list of chapters at the Tale of Gondolin TG page, but that’s all I can find for content.
Recently I started to rewatch KRBAY (I watch it a lot as a little kiddo) and the episodes without King Dedede are really bad, He legitimately carries the show with his southern accent and jokes.
But we've totally moved to the right since then.
