Ive seen people say swift is a bad company but they don't give any reasons.
Today a friend asked me to hang out tonight. I told her I canβt because I had plans with my boyfriend. She asked what we were doing. I told her we were making dinner (TAYquitos and GuacaME!le) and watching Miss Americana. For the record... my boyfriend is a fan of Taylor Swift. We both think she is a masterful songwriter and appreciate her music and her performance prowess.
My friend responds saying βHaha omg youβre going to make him watch that?β
I decided the best way to respond was just by saying, βWhat do you mean?β
She said, βYouβre going to make him watch a Taylor Swift movie!β
I said, βHe likes Taylor Swiftβ
She said, βThat much?β
I said, βWhy wouldnβt he?β
She seemed to avoid the question and responded that she would never watch this film, so I just let it go.
But I know what the real answer to the question βWhy wouldnβt he?β is: βBecause heβs a manβ.
There is so much about this interaction that bothers me. First of all, I hate this assumption that women βmakeβ their male partners do anything. Heβs a free person. I donβt ever make him do anything!
Next, why is it so weird for a guy to be a Swiftie? Taylor Swift is an amazing musician (objectively and subjectively) who has lyrics that can speak to and resonate with anyone. Plus, we all know how strong and catchy her hooks, melodies, and beats are! Taylor Swiftβs music may be written from the female perspective, but it isnβt just for females.
Why is it that when something is written from the male perspective, it is for everyone, but when it is written from the female perspective, it is for females?
Why would it be weird for a man to sit down and watch Miss Americana, but it is not weird for me to watch Springsteen on Broadway? Or the Elton John movie? Or the Queen movie?
This subtle and ingrained sexism is so frustrating!
