>The guests for NPRβs just-released On The Media episode about the dangers of free speech included Andrew Marantz, author of an article called, βFree Speech is Killing Usβ; P.E. Moskowitz, author of βThe Case Against Free Speechβ; Susan Benesch, director of the βDangerous Speech Projectβ; and Berkeley professor John Powell, whose contribution was to rip John Stuart Millβs defense of free speech in On Liberty as βwrong.β
>Thatβs about right for NPR, which for years now has regularly congratulated itself for being a beacon of diversity while expunging every conceivable alternative point of view.
>I always liked Brooke Gladstone, but this episode of On The Media was shockingly dishonest. The show was a compendium of every neo-authoritarian argument for speech control one finds on Twitter, beginning with the blanket labeling of censorship critics as βspeech absolutistsβ (most are not) and continuing with shameless revisions of the history of episodes like the ACLUβs mid-seventies defense of Nazi marchers at Skokie, Illinois.
>The essence of arguments made by all of NPRβs guests is that the modern conception of speech rights is based upon John Stuart Millβs outdated conception of harm, which they summarized as saying, βMy freedom to swing my fist ends at the tip of your nose.β
>Because, they say, we now know that people can be harmed by something other than physical violence, Mill (whose thoughts NPR overlaid with harpsichord music, so we could be reminded how antiquated they are) was wrong, and we have to recalibrate our understanding of speech rights accordingly.
>This was already an absurd and bizarre take, but what came next was worse. I was stunned by Marantz and Powellβs take on Brandenburg v. Ohio, our current legal standard for speech, which prevents the government from intervening except in cases of incitement to βimminent lawless actionβ:
>MARANTZ: Neo-Nazi rhetoric about gassing Jews, that might inflict psychological harm on a Holocaust survivor, but as long as thereβs no immediate incitement to physical violence, the government considers that protectedβ¦ The village of Skokie tried to stop the Nazis from marching, but the ACLU took the case to the Supreme Court, and the court upheld the Nazisβ right to march.
>POWELL: The speech absolutists try to say, βYou canβt regulate speechβ¦β Why? βWell, because it would harm the speaker. It would
... keep reading on reddit β‘In 2012 BDS was calling for musical boycotts. David Renzer (at the time Chairman/CEO of Universal Music Publishing) and Steve Schnur (Music President, Electronic Arts) got together to form a group to help protect their musical artists against BDS harassment called Creative Community for Peace. They soon got: Warner Bros Records, Sony/ATV Publishing, Geffen Records, Atlantic Records, Columbia Records, William Morris Endeavor, Interscope Records, Ultra Records, AEG Presents, Capitol Records, and Amazon to join. They offered 3 services to managers and agents:
Advice, recommendations and support in monitoring and/or managing the messages on social or in traditional media when their artists were under attack.
Support, information, and further explanations of various accusations or threats being made.
Arrangements to meet with β and possibly perform with β Israelis and Palestinians who use music and the art as a bridge to peace; to connect, communicate and better understand each otherβs narratives.
Eventually bands started helping band members. Groups like: Bon Jovi, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, One Republic, The Backstreet Boys, Robbie Williams, Justin Timberlake, Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, alt-J, Chris Brown, Suzanne Vega, Diana Krall, Art Garfunkel, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Dionne Warwick, Rihanna, Clean Bandit, Martin Garrix, Kygo, Enrique Iglesias, The Chainsmokers, Carlos Vives, Jason Derulo, A$AP Ferg, Ziggy Marley, PUSHA T, Chronixx, David Guetta, Flying Lotus, The Black Eyed Peas, Metallica, Linkin Park, Lady Gaga, Daddy Yankee, Akon, Alicia Keys, Justin Bieber, 30 Seconds to Mars, Julio Iglesias, REM, Barbra Streisand, Kaiser Chiefs, Pet Shop Boys, Guns Nβ Roses, Burt Bacharach, Cyndi Lauper, Placebo, Chris Cornell, Alan Parsons, Tony Bennett, Matisyahu, Ron Carter offered their own experiences in how they handled and dealt with BDSer led intimidation and harassment campaigns directly to the groups while allowing Creative Community for Peace to service record companies, managers / agents and band members.
Creative Community for Peace supports dialogue and exchange over cultural boycott:
> We at Creative Community For Peace hope for a peaceful and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We believe dialogue, which can be facilitated through the arts and music, is crucial to helping to achieve this goal. The BDS movement β both thr

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.
