So we have the evaporative air-conditioner developed by Ant-Studio in India using terracotta cylinders and water. Does anyone know if cylinders of the type shown below (named Terraplanters iirc) would increase the cooling effect due to their increased surface area?

Searching for competition to Surface Laptop Studio

Hey there, I am trying to decide on a 2 in 1 laptop to buy for school, programming and a bit of Photoshop or Premiere Pro. I am quite amazed by the SLS, but I want to see if there is competition. I have read that many people are disappointed in MS for releasing a Laptop with only a Quadcore Intel CPU, only a Nvidia 3050Ti and only a 2600x1200px sRGB display. Nonetheless, I fail to find something that rivals the SLS. To begin with, I encountered not a single 2 in 1 with a CPU that incorporates an Intel eight core, so that can't be a point of criticism specifically aimed at MS. My reference is a SLS with the H35 i7-11370H, the NVIDIA 3050Ti and 16GB of RAM.

I looked into HP, Dell, Asus and Lenovo. HP's Spectre x360, which is the best I could find from HP, has far better screen options, however it only incorporates a NVIDIA 3050 instead of a 3050Ti and it's CPU is slightly inferior.

Then I checked out Dell for their 2 in 1s and I don't know if any of the XPS' can be called A rival, if they don't allow for ANY respectable graphics card to be built in. So Dell's laptops are pretty much insufficient in my view.

Lenovo's 2 in 1s also offer no dedicated graphics card, which I find a bit frustrating as well, however the screens are upgradeable to 100% DCI-P3. When I customize the Thinkpad X1 YOGA GEN 6 to my liking, so the best i7 (which is also inferior to the SLS'), 512GB SSD and the 100% DCI-P3 Screen I'd have to pay about 3100€... and I would still only have an Intel Iris Xe.

Asus' lineup didn't make the cut for me either, as the Zenbook Flip 15 for example offers the same inferior i7 as Lenovos' Yoga Gen 6, but at least lets me choose a NVIDIA graphics card. But of course a GTX 1650, which is ALSO inferior to the SLS' 3050Ti, so a bummer again.

What adds up to this, is that all the 2 in 1s from the brands listed above require me to do some, as I call it, screen origami to achieve a tablet- or laptop-mode... the SLS doesn't, it even offers a third state.

So if I were to conclude, the SLS is truly the best 2 in 1 on the market, but I do not understand where all of the huge criticism is coming from. So please, and this goes to everyone, please prove me wrong... maybe I search in the wrong places or I 0just do not see something obvious, but I literally can't find anything that matches the Surface Laptop Studio.

Second hand Surface Laptop Studio

Just received my "like new" Surface Laptop Studio. It is the Core i5 11300H model with onboard graphics, 16 Gb memory, and 256 Gb SSD. I purchased it for $1000, which is $300 cheaper than the lowest price I have seen at any retailer. I'd like to make sure that what I got is a genuine Surface device. Other than running the serial number against Microsoft's records, is there anything else l can do to ensure it's genuine/in "like new" condition?

I'm thinking something along the lines of a Cinebench test, MemTest, etc. Thoughts?

Surface Book 3 vs Surface Studio Laptop vs Surface Pro 8 ?

Hey guys,

I entered the Surface world with a Pro 7 last year and I've got to say I quite enjoyed it but my model (i5 8gb 256) doesn't really have what I need.

For context I'm a student, I do your run of the mill browsing and note taking (the stylus blew my mind on OneNote) but I also have a good slice of Photo and Video Editing as well as a healthy dose of web oriented content creation. My main tools are OneNote, Studio Code, Figma, and Adobe Ai, Ps, Ae and Pr.

I've grown fond of drawing on a screen but I also love drawing anywhere I'm at (so buying a huion canvas won't do), the Pro 7 is k but it has neither the battery life, nor the power to let me do my thing comfortably.

To sum things up I

  • 've fallen in love with 2-in-1s a few years back

  • want something I can draw on like a tablet

  • need some beefy components for media creation

Anyways I've found a good deal on a Surface Book 3 (i7 32Gb 512Gb GTX 1660 for about 2000€) and it feels like a much needed upgrade but I've also been keeping an eye on the Laptop Studio which hasn't yet released here in Europe which means that I have absolutely no clue about the pricing.

Should I go for the Book 3 or is the Laptop Studio worth the wait (and possibly price hike) ?

also, if you know of any other 2-in-1 that can compete with that, I'm all ears

Surface Laptop Studio not displaying Extra Monitors with Surface Dock 2

I just got a new Surface Laptop Studio today, and i purchased a new Surface Dock 2 as i read that the Surface Dock that i had before (for my SP4) was not enough. I also purchased 2 UCB-C-to-DisplayPort cables to with with my monitors that i have. There are all plugged into the back of the dock (not the front 2 ports) and there is no audio device plugged in either. I do have an ethernet cable plugged in though.

However, i am not able to get my setup to work properly. Everytime i plug in a monitor, i get a notification saying that i may not have enough USB power. When i plug in the monitor as well, my USB mouse (i have a USB mouse and keyboard in the back as well, in the USB-A ports) will stop working too.

I have installed all the updates in windows update and i ran the surface diagnostic tool. I tried plugging the USB-C cable directly into the laptop as well (with the dock both in and out of the surface) and it hasn't worked. I tried following instructions and installed a Firmware for the Dock2, though it did technically say Win10 in the name, im not sure if that matters since im on Win11 (there were no Win11 Firmware Updates in the list on the MS website). I also tried plugging / unplugging the power cable into the dock and at the power brick level, as well as changing what port in the surge protector it is in. I also unplugged everything in the power strip and that didn't fix it either.

I tried searching around but i couldn't seem to find any fixes to this (and very few questions about it actually) and wanted to see if anyone here has had this issue. If anyone has any ideas or tips, i appreciate it.

My Surface Laptop Studio review

I have had this for a week. I have a 16" MacBook which performs well but I need a Nvidia GPU for CUDA programming and a stylus for teaching, so I got this laptop. I genuinely like this laptop and wish I could keep it, but there are a few serious flaws that are hard to fix and might make me return it.
Pros
+Great stylus accuracy (useful for teaching online & in person. I can write equations shown on a projector, and teach coding on visual studio at the same time.)
+Great 3:2 screen aspect ratio for editing documents.
+Better keyboard and haptic trackpad than most laptops
+10nm Intel processor
+Nvidia GPU good for gaming, CUDA programming and machine learning
+Thunderbolt 4 ports, finally!
Cons
-The Nvidia GPU board keeps drawing 10 Watts of power even on idle. This drains the battery quite fast. Hot air is blown out of the vents and onto my hands even on idle. I have not been able to fix this, even by reinstalling Windows, and will probably have to return the laptop for this reason. Windows & Nvidia Optimus should turn off the discrete GPU and just use the integrated Intel GPU on battery power, but this does not happen.
-No DisplayPort via USB-C to HDMI adapter on the market (including Microsoft's) can output 4K@60Hz on an external monitor from this laptop. I only get 30 Hz and tried a dozen dongles (all of which work on a macbook). The only way to get 4K@60Hz is to use an expensive Microsoft Dock 2 or to connect a DisplayPort over USB Type-C cable directly to the monitor, if the monitor supports it (mine does, but if you have only HDMI, you are out of luck).
-4 core processor not enough for scientific computing. My 2019 Intel i9 16" MacBook has 8 cores and is twice as fast in matrix multiplication.
-The trackpad is not very precise when I drag the cursor with the tip of my finger. It jumps and wiggles slightly when I drag it on a straight line. I find myself having to correct where the cursor lands using the keyboard when text editing. This is annoying. Microsoft in 2021 should be able to replicate the accuracy of a 2019 macbook trackpad.
-Even if you buy the expensive business version with the Nvidia A2000 GPU, the GPU only has 4GB or RAM. The older Surface Book 3 business version had a 6GB Quadro GPU. This is important, esp. considering the business version cost.
-When I close the lid and let the laptop sleep for a bit, or overnight, and I open it later, it has often shut down, an

I have a fully loaded SLS.

It runs really hot on the basic settings of after effects, I have a video on one layer and some 3d shape layer text on another. It's running so hot short of burning.

Should a 3 minute video with some 3d shape layers (of basic text) take 40+ minutes to render out video Adobe Media Encoder?

I was hoping by having the latest and greatest that I could avoid anything from slowing me down and to just allow me to create.

Is the Surface Laptop Studio worth getting just to use the Slim Pen 2? I already have Surface Book 2

The Surface Book 2 cost over $2,000 (2 years ago) and I haven’t really used it for the reason I bought it yet.

It crashes with a BSOD and nvlddmkm.sys EVERY SINGLE TIME that I reattach the screen after detaching it. It’s done that since day 1, and I didn’t use it for awhile so just got around trying to fix it (mistakingly falling for Driver Booster what might as well be MALWARE, almost making my PC COMPLETELY UNUSABLE until realizing I had an auto saved backup so we’d fortunately able to system restore to 5 days before, and THINK that reset the drivers, I hope it did).

So, getting a new PC could potentially eliminate the still remaining nvlddmkm.sys BSOD as well.

Why is a PC so much newer AND with more RAM (32 GB vs my current 16 GB) so much cheaper than my 2 year old Surface Book 2???

I think 14 inches screen is smaller than what I have now, but i don’t think there is an option for bigger screen if I upgrade to the SLS, but I could use the Slim Pen 2 fully (tactile feedback which wouldn’t work on my SB2)

I don’t know if I could even sell my SB2 for $1,000, considering the newest one barely cost more than that (I paid over $2,000, and the newest is cheaper!)

I wanted to try drawing and stuff, and it’d be pretty cool if it felt like drawing on paper, since that’s the primary way I plan to draw (on the screen).

I originally bought it for graphic design and 2D animation, but kind of got lost in life again after the pandemic lockdown and haven’t gotten back to school and unsure of what I want to do for sure, but starting out drawing and stuff to try graphic design and animation maybe, is still a cheaper and easier step than going back to school first.

Should I just keep what I have (I’d be SHOCKED if the SLS (or even cheaper SP8) were overall were powerful than my SB2, but maybe the newer technology has just gotten cheaper???? Completely contradicts inflation, so I’m skeptical.

I think I have like, ADHD, because it’s hard to stick with or fully get into anything, but I’m sick of my life passing me by, and just need to try and force something I guess, before I get even older and still missing out on life and be miserable without meaning or purpose or anything worth living for…..

Preserving battery life on Surface Laptop Studio connected to a Dock

I recently got a Surface Laptop Studio and I love it. I bought it specifically to use as a primary work computer, since my desktop (circa 2016) was showing it's age. I have a Surface Dock that handles all the things I need connected, but my concern is battery life.

The Dock connects to the power port on the SLS, which means when I'm working the battery is constantly connected to charging. My partner has used his Surface 7 pretty much always connected to power, and his battery life has suffered for it. I'm trying to avoid that.

I'm open to getting a new Dock, whether it's the Surface Dock 2, Plugable or something else, but I'm trying to find out if there is a way to connect the dock just for the peripherals, without the device also charging from the connection. I can charge when I need to, but I'd like that to be independent of the dock.

Looking for general knowledge as well as recommendations on docking stations.

Surface Studio Extremely Slow, Even During Windows 10 recovery set up

I recently noticed my first gen Surface Studio was taking forever to open things, like File Explorer or any app. I decided to try to do a restore. During the set up, all the menus were incredibly slow, like it took 10 seconds for keyboard commands to show.

I tried doing a hard reset which resulted in a Win logo screen forever.

So, I did a USB recovery of Windows 10. This time it got through everything but the menus were all still extremely slow, but not as bad. It finally got to the desktop where things still don't seem right.

Is this a hardware (hard drive) issue or OS problem? I've used the computer for years then it suddenly started acting this way.

I'm currently letting it update everything but the desktop is slow as well. Super confused... πŸ˜– Any help here would be appreciated!

$1500 budget: Surface Book 3 15” vs Surface Studio

I found some open box deals on a couple laptops. Currently have a SB2 and love it. Both are $1500:

Surface Studio - 14.4" 16gb 512gb with 3050ti

OR

Surface Book 3 -15" 32gb 1tb with 1660ti

It looks like the GPU and battery life are better with the surface book 3. So it's mostly down to form factor. Decisions decisions. I don’t think I NEED the 1tb and ram. Those are nice though.

how's the upgrade from a surface book 2 15 to a surface laptop studio?

has anyone used both devices? my current daily driver is the Surface Book 2 15" at the highest config. i'm a game dev and the book has begun to show its limits/faults, particularly when trying to show games over hdmi - the gpu will disconnect and not reconnect until it wants to. i have to make quite a few compromises, like running the book 2 in 1080p to get smooth frames.

i'm looking at getting a new device, and while budget is not a huge concern, 'feeling' totally is.** i can't really get a sense of these things in reviews, like for example: **

the Book 2 has kind of spoiled me, since i never ever feel the heat from the computer. since it's in the top. the fan noise is annoying to me tho, as it definitely does kick in super loud.

after combing through the options (XPS, Razer Blades, Asus ProArt), i'm still seeing the SLS as the best option, despite the mid-range specs (for design reasons, like the charging cable placement/design, the keyboard/trackpad, aesthetic)

on paper/benchmark comparisons i'm seeing there's a 20-30% improvement across the board. is that accurate irl?

note - i'm fairly satisfied with the current performance of my Book 2. but, the idea of it running cooler/better/faster is dreamy. is the SLS a straight upgrade in that sense?

tl;dr: how is the actual experience with the SLS in relation to the best SB2 15, and how far can i push it before the fans start screaming? will it perform noticeably better than my Surface Book 2?

thanks!

edit: i'm almost always plugged in charging as well - since my book 2 battery deletes itself otherwise.

My Surface Laptop Studio Impression

Surface Laptop Studio Specs : i5 16 GB RAM 256 GB SSD

Main use of the device: Browsing internet Netflix/Disney Python StudioR

So I have had the Surface Studio Laptop for a month now and I think , its one of the quickest devices out there. Even though its a base model, it still works flawlessly.

Windows Hello is snappy and It detects me even if it's dark and log me in within milli seconds.

The overall build quality is alright. It looks heavy, but it's not and even with some heavy use, the fans hardly kicks in or gets loud. Its pretty silent.

Running Python or Studio R on the device is smooth. Performance will be tested once I start running bigger scripts and more complex programs, perhaps.

I do play games on my SLS. New World, No Man's Sky, Dota, Counter Strike. Initially installed games on the device but I saw that 256GB is not enough and ended up investing in ASUS Strix SSD enclosure and a 1TB Kingston ssd. Moved all games on this external drive. The games runs smooth and there's hardly any slow down and so far, I haven't experienced any crashes.

This is my first device with USB C and when i bought the SLS I thought it wouldn't be much of a problem until I actually needed to use my USB the next day. It was a pain to adjust to this change. Lack of HDMI, USB A, and memory card slot is something that is a turn off. I feel, these features are necessary and especially if you are using your device on a daily basis. I ended up buying USB C Docking Station and it has since resolved a lot of connectivity issues, but now I have to carry it with me at all times. It's extra weight and stuff that's a bit annoying.

The build quality is alright. No dents, or gaps. Although I would say that my screen flickers a little sometimes. It feels like it's constantly changing brightness. Some little research and it turns out that it's some issue with the drivers and it's a little common. Still trying to figure out the root cause. Will be reaching out to Microsoft Support in a day or so.

The battery life have improved significantly. On a single charge with basic use ie browsing and listening to songs, I am getting about 9 hours of battery life. When I bought the device, I was getting 4 hours on a single charge which was expected because every new device takes a bit of time to adjust plus windows updates do affect the battery.

One of the best addition is the happiness feedback track pad. It's smooth and works as intended.

Hello everyone! I’m a friendly neighborhood beginner artist and I recently bought a surface studio laptop since my previous one broke. Lately I’ve seen so many artists draw on their surface device directly, and I tried lineart for the first time on my surface with paint tool sai but found myself going back to my intuos 4.

I know paint tool sai is an amazing program and I love doing lineart on it, but I also want to maximize my surface studio. Any tips for drawing directly on surface with SAI? Or how was the experience going from a wacom tablet to a surface?

Still a bit reluctant to switch to CSP since I’ve become so comfortable with SAI. Thank you!!

Is it worth getting a Surface Studio 2 in 2022?

I'm a graduating college student this semester and looking for a good sturdy computer for graphic design/animation:: so I discovered the surface studio!

The issue is that the model 2 is outdated and from the same year of the laptop I'm trying to replace. At the extreme price, I'm not sure if it's something worth investing in for the age.

Would it be worth it to buy in 2022 or should I just try to wait it out for a new model/keep looking for a different computer?

Digital drawing of Alexios from AC: Odyssey. Drawn on Surface Studio 2. Took maybe 60+ hours to complete. Not quite sure though. Titled "My Odyssey"

Surface Laptop Studio Color Gamut

I recently bought a DataColor SpyderX colorimeter to profile my monitors & TVs. Here are the results on my Surface Laptop Studio (i5 model):

100% sRGB coverage https://imgur.com/Z4XjXZv

78% NTSC coverage https://imgur.com/kJV8mgd

81% AdobeRGB coverage https://imgur.com/vUcM7dS

87% DCI-P3 coverage https://imgur.com/dpAGBxf

This is not as impressive as the Surface Studio or the MacBook Pro, which both have fuller DCI-P3 coverage.

My ICC file is here for reference: https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArUWWaMHW5DBkK06UEZQ0dpaUNqB3g?e=VLkioe Note that your particular display may be slightly different so you may not want to just apply my profile to your SLS. The SurfaceVivid.icc profile which came with my computer is almost identical (slightly smaller gamut) to the profile I measured with the colorimeter, so I think the intent from Microsoft is that SurfaceVivid matches the gamut of your device. It is not fakery -- it is not overly saturating your display or doing anything tricky to it... it actually captures the range of colors the display should be able to produce.

I found that the gamut was widest at around 80% brightness (according to the brightness settings available using the F6 and F7 keys), however most of the levels were very close in gamut. The darkest settings are worst. It did not seem to make a difference whether the display was set to 60hz or 120hz refresh rate.

I noticed that once or twice while testing, the color gamut did not exceed sRGB. I wonder if there was some power-saving behavior active at the time reducing performance of the display. I haven't been able to reproduce this so I'm not sure what it was.

I tried with both the standard graphics drivers and the latest Intel drivers. I was hoping that by installing the Intel drivers I might be able to enable 10 bit color, but it only lets me pick between 6 bits per channel and 8 bits per channel, even at low resolution and 60hz refresh rate. There also was some kind of problem assigning ICC profiles while the Intel driver was installed, so I rolled back to the standard display drivers and everything is working again.

There is currently a bug/issue in Windows 11 causing color management in some software not to work correctly, including in Chrome and Edge browsers. Hopefully Microsoft fixes this soon. [https://www.reddit.co
