Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal once told Al-Hasan ibn Isma'il Al-Rib'ee: 90 men of the greatest scholars agreed that the way of the Prophet (s) can be summarized in:
-
Contentment with the Decree of Allah, surrendering to His Command, patience upon His Will, accepting what He prescribed, and leaving what He prohibited.
-
Faith in Allah's Divine Decree, the good of it and the bad of it
-
Staying away from argumentation in matters of religion
-
Wiping over the socks
-
Fighting alongside the Khalifah, be he righteous or not
-
Offering the funeral prayer over every dead Muslim
-
Acknowledging that faith is word and action and that it increases with acts of obedience and decreases with sin
-
That the Qur'an is the Speech of Allah, revealed upon the heart of His Prophet Muhammad (s), uncreated
-
Patience under the banner of the Sultan and what it contains of justice and transgression
-
Not taking up an armed rebellion against the leaders, even when they transgress
-
Not labeling anyone of the people of Tawheed as a disbeliever even if they commit major sins
-
Staying away from discussing the disputes which occurred between the Companions of the Messenger (s)
-
That the best of people after the Messenger of Allah are Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali, the cousin of the Messenger (s)
-
Praying upon all of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (s), his children, his wives, and his son-in-law, may Allah's Pleasure be upon them all.
This is the Sunnah (correct beliefs and way), hold on to it and you will be safe, taking it is guidance, and leaving it is misguidance.
From the book: "Tabaqat Al-Hanabilah"
