I was rewatching Episode 6, and I noticed some stray Ashton comments that sent me into a Pepe Silvia-esque theory spiral.
Lemme explain:
As we all know, Taliesin Jaffe is the king of unheard one liners. This case is no exception. To watch for yourself, go to episode 6 at 52:21, and watch Taliesin.
When Laudna initially says that she died, a bunch of people start to interject but Ashton just says “No no no, it happens, it happens!” to encourage her to keep elaborating.
Then when Laudna explains that she died thirty years ago, Ashton goes, "Woah! You look fucking great," (Imogen looks at them and nods with a smile) and then Ashton says "I thought I looked great, but you look great!"
Another missed comment, when Orym expresses his disbelief, asking, “How can you be dead?” Ashton responds to him by saying, “Shit happens. It’s a weird fuckin’ world.” Orym responds to the ‘shit happens’ comment by saying, “Yeah, and then you die!” to which Ashton gives a little shrug before they both go back to paying attention to Laudna.
Maybe these comments just mean that Ashton is well traveled or has simply seen things like this before. But the second comment, combined with their visible injuries, has me thinking that Ashton has experienced something very similar to Laudna.
Another suspicious comment, but less directly related, occurs when Chetney rolls a history check to know what they mine in the Smolder Spire, Ashton chimes in with a very specific remark: “They do pull gems out of the earth, too. There is a diamond mine. Things like that... It's a lot of mining operations, mostly.” - Episode 8. Just seemed like a very pointed comment, especially since Matt had already given Chetney the information that he would know about the Smolder Spire . Maybe Ashton is very familiar with the diamond mine of the Smolder Spire for resurrection related reasons. Or perhaps Ashton is very familiar with this because they were once a gem dug up in a mining operation too.
So if Ashton died, then you’d have to wonder when and how and why. Which leads us to...
>“I've been living in this city for quite a few years now, just picking up odd jobs, living in the Core Spire. Got a nice place, got a nice life. Beats anything else I've found so far.” - Ashton, Episode 1, when asked what their ‘story’ was.
But 10 years ago (give or take), Ashton had a complicated relationship with one or more

⚽️ GOAL! De Bruyne equaliser (2-2)
Let us start with the biggest problem in the England set-up: the set-up itself. Chris Silverwood asked for complete control over the national side and he got it, combining the head coach and head selector role into something akin to a hands-on football manager.
This is a big part of the problem.
Unfortunately, in his dual-role he is an utter failure: he consistently fails to select the best players available (Ben Foakes says hi) and the players he does select seem to consistently get worse the longer they spend around the England set-up.
This is all the more frustrating given that the perfect candidate for his job was already in the dressing room. Paul Farbrace was the architect for a lot of what would ultimately be attributed to Trevor Bayliss in the white ball game. He has since gone to Warwickshire and revitalised their red ball team with players like Rob Yates improving markedly since his arrival. Either he should be made Head Coach or given an overarching Director of Cricket role with oversight all the way from the top down to the (recently shambolic) Under-19 team.
For selection, I would be very keen to bring in Duncan Fletcher as a Head Scout. At a time when county cricket tells us depressingly little of value, it may be worth picking the brains of the man who discovered Michael V*****n, Marcus Trescothick, Simon Jones and Steve Harmison when they were statistically mediocre county players. If you had Farbrace as Head Coach, Fletcher could be Director of Cricket.
England has become a one-day specialist cricket nation at all levels. My first priority would be that the Hundred gets yeeted into the sun. My second priority would be that the County Championship be re-structured to create a more high-quality cricketing set-up like New Zealand did.
As standards slip, Stevens is supreme.
New Zealand until the mid-2000s had an entirely amateur domestic set-up. The regional teams functioned more like the very top level of club cricket. The result of this was that the teams prepared facilities designed to suit their own strengths (dibbly dobbly wibbly wobbly bowlers like you'd see in club cricket) and a huge amount of New Zealand's best
