Iβve always loved the style of Steve Cropper and think heβs one of the more underappreciated guitar players.
His ability to weave single note lead lines and rhythm playing is unbelievable and his tone is just the definition of cool.
Iβm 23 and have been playing for about 4 years and have tried to pick up on some of Cropperβs tricks and am wondering if any of you have had any luck in learning his style.
So Iβm 22 and have been playing guitar for about 3 years and have always gravitated to the sound of Booker T and the Mgβs, specifically Steve Cropper. Iβve watched a couple of videos on how to mimick his style a bit which is a good start but Iβm looking for more. If any of you have any advice that would be appreciated thanks.
This week I did another '5 Guitar Licks' video showing some ideas to play over a funky soul vamp in G based on some of the sounds on the great Stax and Motown records.
The guitarists in the house bands like Steve Cropper and Robert White were amazing at coming up with simple, melodic parts that always helped better the song. One thing in particular I always love hearing in their playing is the way they would harmonize a simple melody with intervals. The licks in this video focus on showing ways to harmonize a basic melody with thirds, fourths, and sixths to create a more interesting solo.
On my website you can find some more writing about each lick, get a PDF download of the notation and TAB, and download a backing track of the rhythm section in the video to practice with:
