A common misconception I run across is that a lot of people seem to believe that Ivy League colleges are considered Ivy League because they are the "better" or "best" universities in terms of academia. While it's true that all the Ivy League schools are up there in academic rankings (which are highly debated to begin with), it's merely a coincidence.
For example, Harvard is always touted as "the best" school in the world in the media. Take a look at the TV show Suits, where they only take Harvard LS grads because they're the best. In reality, Yale has been ranked as the top law school by several different publications for several years.
Likewise in the NBA, Jeremy Lin is seen in such high regard partially because he's from Harvard (disregarding the Asian American issue, making it as an undrafted player, etc.). There are plenty of players from Stanford who aren't esteemed for their academic intelligence even though Jeremy Lin only went to Harvard because he was rejected by Stanford.
Basically, YSK that there are a handful of universities that are ranked higher than some of the Ivy Leagues. Just to name a few (from USN, the most commonly referred to list): University of Chicago, MIT, Stanford, Duke, and CalTech.
