A list of puns related to "Socan Songwriting Prize"
It's been a few months since I last checked over the SOCAN repertoire but it seems like the cut Curiosity album tracks have recently (as in, sometime in the past couple of months) been registered. These are definitely new listings as Angels was the only song to be listed previously afaik
Katie's Kicking in the Corner, another unreleased song written during the Curiosity sessions has been newly registered too. Curiosity's ten year anniversary is coming up early next year, so I don't think a rerelease is completely out of the question, but either way this is interesting enough that I thought to share lol

So I had posted this about a month ago here but the guy in charge of the contest emailed me back when I attempted to contact him one more time. After trying to ask for a way to work out some way to receive the rest of my winnings he says "sorry, no." and that the original advertisement on the website at the time stated "The prizes may vary based on availability." So I checked it out on archive.org and sure enough it did read that. Am I pretty much guaranteed a loss in court because of it stating that?
I live in Oklahoma and the contest company address is in Arkansas.
YouTube recommended me and old Todd In The Shadows video on Magic's Rude. I really hate that song so I hot curious about it. In the video, Todd says the lead singer, Nasri, was a songwriter before he had his first hit, including some Chris Brown song and Justin Bieber's Mistletoe.
Continuing my curiosity, I searched if he had written anything since then and to my surprise he did. He has co-written Chloe X Halle's Busy Boy, which is surprising but not that out of his style now considering but he also co-wrote Don't Make It Harder On Me!!!!!!! This left me speechless, it's by far one of their best songs and sounds so timeless and is just a great listen. I think Rude is one of the worst songs I've ever heard so to know Nasri also have written one of the best I've ever heard got me.
Another surprise is that Mariah Carey, which is basically considered the queen of Christmas because of All I Want For Christmas Is You, has also written Where Are You Christmas for the How The Grinch Stole Christmas movie. So basically, Mariah has written two of the most well known Christmas songs of all time. If she had a penny for every big Christmas hit she wrote, she would have two pennies which is not a lot but it's weird that this happened twice.
As a Canadian artist should I register with bmi ,ascap Or socan I got more fans in the US if that matters at all Most of my fans are in France and the u.k Is that even relevant when dealing with a pro My main question is where should I register myself Would socan still collect royalties from other countries or just Canada From my understanding it seems like I may have to sign up by country to get all my royalties ?
i was thinking about when that group of songwriters came together in early 2021 demanding artists to stop taking royalties for songs they didn't write and was wondering which artists they could be talking about
Hey all, so today I was looking over the SOCAN and GEMA repertoires and discovered a couple of new songs I've not seen anybody else talk about. I'm unsure if they're newly registered but it doesn't seem likely, I just thought it was interesting enough to share either way lol
GEMA: Back of My Heart
This one was featured in the Making of Emotion video way back, so it was a complete surprise to find it here. Written with Chris Braide and Ali Tamposi
SOCAN: Bold Type
Written with James Flannigan, Carly's ex-boyfriend whom she met in 2016 so most likely intended for Dedicated or written sometime after
GEMA: Not the Only One
Written with Tobias Gad
GEMA: I Feel The Sun On You
Written with Tobias Gad, an alternative title for Sun On You, a Curiosity era track that leaked a few years ago
I've updated my list of unreleased songs and I'm currently working on separate unreleased tracker as well - check it out if you're interested!
I'm 15 years old, and I sing, play piano and barely play guitar along with my friend who plays the drums. We also occasionally use Ableton to do music that way. Is there any advice you'd want to give to a couple of young new songwriters?
Theyβre definitely the best, but whoβs been the best since they stopped writing together? Was thinking about this as itβs a really interesting topic, and an interesting dynamic between the two writers. Itβs fascinating how just two people who know each other well can write fantastic song after fantastic song. But who are some of the best in your opinion? As this is a music discussion sub, I thought it would belong here, and Iβd love to get your thoughts.
Onto my personal favourites. Morrissey and Marr (of The Smiths) are probably my out right favourite. In just four years, they both created 4 instant classic albums and a plethora of singles. Morriseyβs lyrics are some of the most emotional youβll get. Heβs not scared to speak his mind on issues he cares about, while he talks to a whole generation disconnected from society (βI am human and need to be loved, just like everybody else does). All the while Marr has his jangly and happy guitar perfectly juxtaposing Morriseyβs melancholic lyrics. My favourite song where this is displayed is βThat Joke Isnβt Funny Anymoreβ.
My other favourite songwriting duo are Strummer and Jones of The Clash. Like The Smiths, they had a quite short career, yet delivered 5 classic albums (Not counting Cut The Crap as Jones had been sacked by that point) in 6 years. Their songwriting to begin with was without doubt slightly basic, but had a true punk message that resonated with people. Their writing just got better. By London Calling, they had a synergy unmatched, managing to make a double album with no dud song. They retained that punk spirit in their writing but, they had gone to the next level. Sandinista! is what amazes me though- 36 tracks on a triple album coming out just a year after releasing a double album. Iβll admit, it has filler, but to write so many good songs in such a short period of time, whilst touring as well, is unparalleled. And I forgot to mention, all while consistently changing genres and styles- from basic punk on the debut to reggae and jazz on London Calling to funk and dub on Sandinista!. They could write a hit pop song too. Favourite song by them is probably either βThe Magnificent Sevenβ or βSpanish Bombsβ. Whilst maybe not being as good as Morrisey and Marr, they definitely get most improved.
What do you think of my choices, and what are yours. Iβm looking forward to reading them.
Looking to blow some friends away who only think of Taylor as her most famous singles like shake it off, we are never ever, etc.
Here is my first choice: I didn't have it in myself to go with grace And so the battleships will sink beneath the waves You had to kill me, but it killed you just the same Cursing my name, wishing I stayed You turned into your worst fears And you're tossing out blame, drunk on this pain Crossing out the good years And you're cursing my name, wishing I stayed Look at how my tears ricochet
I turn on Netflix to some show I barely know and jump on guitar and start playing/singing. I have written a lot of my favorite songs this way. It distracts my head enough that I have no clue what I am playing and ideas start to pour out.
I feel the same way when I play while my friends are around talking. The pressure to find something is lifted and I am just jamming away.
What is your secret to the craft?
A very biased post from a Giselle stan so please look away if this triggers anyone :))
I know this is a bit late but just wanna share how proud I am of Giselle who now has participated in the writing of two songs. One of them is her debut teaser song βSYNKβ and the latest one is her first ever collab song with NCT members βZOOβ. On SMTOWN Winter album, she is credited as one of the Korean lyrics writers!
She did a great job at both songs and as a fan, Iβm so proud of her and canβt wait to see her growing more as an artist.
And, what a flex it is for an SM female idol to have a writing credit on their own songs, especially as a rookie.
I've been listening to George Harrison's solo work, and despite liking the songs Paul wrote the most, especially on Revolver, George Harrison's albums have really grown on me and are my personal favorite material to come after the breakup of the Beatles.
Considering that John had left the band in September '69, do you think its possible that Paul & George would've overcome their creative differences and the remaining 3 could've created some more albums into the 70s?
