A list of puns related to "Socan"
It's been a few months since I last checked over the SOCAN repertoire but it seems like the cut Curiosity album tracks have recently (as in, sometime in the past couple of months) been registered. These are definitely new listings as Angels was the only song to be listed previously afaik
Katie's Kicking in the Corner, another unreleased song written during the Curiosity sessions has been newly registered too. Curiosity's ten year anniversary is coming up early next year, so I don't think a rerelease is completely out of the question, but either way this is interesting enough that I thought to share lol

As a Canadian artist should I register with bmi ,ascap Or socan I got more fans in the US if that matters at all Most of my fans are in France and the u.k Is that even relevant when dealing with a pro My main question is where should I register myself Would socan still collect royalties from other countries or just Canada From my understanding it seems like I may have to sign up by country to get all my royalties ?
Hey all, so today I was looking over the SOCAN and GEMA repertoires and discovered a couple of new songs I've not seen anybody else talk about. I'm unsure if they're newly registered but it doesn't seem likely, I just thought it was interesting enough to share either way lol
GEMA: Back of My Heart
This one was featured in the Making of Emotion video way back, so it was a complete surprise to find it here. Written with Chris Braide and Ali Tamposi
SOCAN: Bold Type
Written with James Flannigan, Carly's ex-boyfriend whom she met in 2016 so most likely intended for Dedicated or written sometime after
GEMA: Not the Only One
Written with Tobias Gad
GEMA: I Feel The Sun On You
Written with Tobias Gad, an alternative title for Sun On You, a Curiosity era track that leaked a few years ago
I've updated my list of unreleased songs and I'm currently working on separate unreleased tracker as well - check it out if you're interested!
My goal is to register with SOCAN as a publisher. I am a producer/beatmaker... bit of rap, but not my main focus. The criteria for registering as a publisher appears simple, I have to prove that I own copyright for 5 songs, written by a SOCAN member/Canadian songwriter.
Firstly, what is a βsongβ? I have plenty of original beats, could an instrumental be a song? Is a composer not a songwriter? Or do I have to put lyrics to that song?
Secondly, say I have my 5 songs ready to be published. I will then sign the ownership of those sounds from myself (songwriter) to myself (publishing company) for submission to SOCAN. Will my company need to be a registered business at this point? I understand I would need to have it registered to collect income under that company name, but can I avoid doing this until after I apply with a P.R.O.?
Thanks! βοΈ
I searched this sub for mention of ASCAP and I donβt see it. I still think the forthcoming German radio archive βdata dumpβ is the best lead. But I donβt see that anyone has done an ASCAP or SOCAN search? Downside is the title is not known. And the searches are for titles not lyrics. A title search for βLike the Windβ gave 70+ results at ASCAP and 39 at SOCAN. I didnβt check BMG. I donβt what the equivalent European industry databases would be. These searches would involve a lot of βgrunt workβ but thatβs the way this shit gets done.
Also, for what it is worth (stop reading here if you donβt care about my random opinion) I donβt think it is a demo. The poor sound quality and apparent poor mix quality is perhaps from the recording and re-recording method. The music is pretty tightly produced and formulaic. It isnβt dark wave or goth, it is a pastiche of eighties musical tropes, to me. Not sure the βdemoβ idea is debunked or not. My sense is this was produced and released by a label, the problem is it is way before Interwebs and some old school searching like the radio archive is what will find it. Unless someone 50+ hears it and recognizes it. I assume there have been numerous attempts to cross post to other subs. Crowdsourcing will find it once the crowd is big enough.
As the title suggests, I'm a Canadian producer and was wondering If it would make any difference if I sign up with my native PRO or just use one of the PROs from the states. I heard SOCAN sends your info to BMI/ASCAP so there would be no issues to integrate the latter.
Happy holidays to everyone out there!
Question for my Canadian friends:
Getting mega-conflicting reports (from knowledgeable sources!) on if SOCAN collects GST/HST on AV royalties (Intl and domestic), or if they don't, if we're required to claim said royalties as taxable income on our HST/GST returns. I am a HST/GST registrant.
One tax article by an entertainment accountant says that SOCAN collects tax on behalf of music makers, and that all SOCAN royalties are GST/HST "taxes-paid" by the time we get the cheque.
Another article by an different accountant states that SOCAN is "not required to pay GST/HST on distributions to its members, and as a member, you're not required to collect GST/HST on your distributions."
So I'm not sure what to believe. My statements are basic, with just amounts earned shown, and although I've earned a few bucks in royalties in past years, I've never received any tax documents from SOCAN. And unsurprisingly, their website is useless for any business/tax-related queries.
Trying to plan for tax season and while I assume I'll have to claim my royalties as income on my personal income tax, I'm wondering if those AV royalties will help me get a HST/GST credit (if the HST/GST had already been paid to the government before it reached my hands) OR if it counts as a zero-rated/exempt income on my GST/HST return.
Any direction would be super helpful. First year with any significant royalty income (and every resource is closed until Jan 2nd) so am grateful for the help. Thanks!
Hey there
Does anyone know how SOCAN licensing works if I'm just going to be playing music off of a Spotify playlist? There is no DJ or band involved. I pay for a Spotify account. Thanks in advance
Does anyone have experience applying for the SOCAN and Re:Sound licenses? I'm getting married in an untraditional venue (using a Spotify playlist vs a DJ), and am wondering if I need to pay these fees, and if so, how exactly I pay them. From these organizations websites it seems as though usually businesses apply for the licenses, not individuals.
I volunteer on the board of a charity organization that promotes music education, with a focus on youths. We regularly do musical performances as a way to fund raise, and also to give youths an opportunity to perform with us for the experience.
We've been operating this way for 10 years, then just recently we werere contacted by SOCAN saying that we need to pay their fees. They want us to pay them 10% of our earnings, which will go to the original artists/composers.
I'm all for paying dues where dues are owed. However, charities do get a lot of special passes on a lot of stuff, so just to be thorough, I ask if charities are exempt from these fees. He said no, so we pay up. I did a bit of research afterwards though, and found this: http://www.socan.ca/node/772
Under the exemptions section, it says charitable organizations are exempt from license fees, if the performance is in furtherance of our charitable goal.
It says license fees though, and SOCAN collects performance fees, and I don't know how one affects the other.
So now I'm confused. Anyone else have any experience with this? I will be contacting the SOCAN rep again with this new found info, but just wanted to get some opinions from outside sources as well.
This ecosystem represents a universal, international currency that will compensate all artists and performers across the world! The aforementioned will be compensated regardless of individual membership to their respective Performance Rights Organization. However additional perks, rewards and income will be available when these members fully adopt our system.
Both the CYFM and MFTU token represents a βbroadcast currencyβ that will be used inside of the ecosystem for listeners, fans and users. For example, listeners may win MFTU tokens in a radio contest, they may use the tokens to purchase premium memberships for song-skipping, on-demand downloads, commercial free streams and other benefits.
