Silent Number Puns

Robocalls are placed by computer software that is automatically dialing numbers until someone picks up. When someone picks up and says “Hello” the call is then connected, labeled as a live number and will be called repeatedly. Pick up, don’t say a word and you will hear silence on the other end as well. Keep silent until the call drops. You staying silent doesn’t allow the software to fully connect the call and from then on you will be passed up by that machine. Letting the phone go to voicemail or forwarding counts as answering the call and speaking, don’t let it go to voicemail if you can help it.

I’ve recently learned this and after about 2 weeks I get zero robocalls now. It actually works!

EDIT: this only works with true robocalls, if you answer and someone else is on the line it will not work. When you answer, stay silent and if the other end is also silent, this will work.

Also obviously doesn’t work for bill collectors

Any advice how to stop this is greatly appreciated

Why YSK: If you want to know when you are being called by a loved one (e.g., for an emergency), but you don't want to be notified by all possible notifications, this option is helpful. Note that it won't work for texts, only calls. It does ignore the silent-mode switch, too, meaning if they call you will hear it despite both DND and silent mode.

I have job applications out so I always answer my phone if it's an unknown number. Lately I've been getting a lot of spam calls where after I answer there's complete silence. Why is this?

Follow up : is my fear that they're recording my voice to somehow do something bad with it completely irrational?

I mean, it’s not like I can steal their identity through a VIN number, ha..

I rather get as much info as I can about the car before I go look at it. It saves everyone time..

Not sure where to post this so I’m putting it here for now. Just today I’ve gotten 9 calls from random numbers with the same area code as me so they’re local. When I pick up it’s completely silent and I’ve experimented and if I don’t hang up first the other side hangs up usually after 13 or so seconds. They’ve been spread throughout the day but all come from different numbers, each of the 9 calls so far. All silent and a handful of them my boyfriend called back from his phone it said it’s an out of service number.

At this point I don’t know what it is but it’s extremely annoying. Maybe a scam of some sort? I don’t know why so many all in one day either. Never had it like this before. Anybody know what’s going on? Or what I should do? I block each number after they call but new ones come in from different numbers so it doesn’t seem to be doing anything

(28/F) I typically don’t bother with these and go about my day but this one is so curious. He (25/M) connected with me on a dating app and we both thought we looked familiar (turned out we connected in 2018 before my relationship and he ghosted after exchanging #’s).

So we exchange #’s, we text for a bit, make plans to meet up (it was just for sex) and he flakes the day we meet. So, naturally I just told him to lose my number as I don’t like flakes.

A few weeks later he’s popping up on all of my dating apps, tinder, bumble, hinge. So I match out of curiosity, didn’t bring up his flaking… and he gives me his # again.

We text for a day and he goes radio silent.

Any idea what this guys deal is? If he’s not interested why keep my number on tab? I don’t get it.

Yesterday night, I posted a picture to the Stellaris subreddit. It was an unused screenshot that I almost used in my fanfiction project before changing my mind. At least two of the people who commented on the post told me that they've read and enjoyed my stories, even though I've never seen them on the forums before. One of the two claimed to be "super-hooked".

So now I'm going to remind all of you, my friends: Plenty of readers might never appear in your comment/review sections, but they do exist and some of them are just as hooked as your most vocal reviewer or commenter; if not more.

The way he always has the time to speak to me if the end goal is sex. But then never has the time once he’s gotten that. The silent treatment is deadly to me. It’s literally telling me I’m not even worth words. That to me , is so cruel. It causes me to lose grounding. Causes me to drive myself mad just begging for anything. At this point I would rather him confess how much he hates me. But he’s too composed . He’s so apathetic that he can’t even muster up words. I post way to much lately , but the pain is so unreal. I tried so hard to get him to see this time. To see what he’s doing, and why it’s not okay. But it doesn’t matter . Even in narc world I’m at the bottom of his list of supply. So why did he keep coming back is the million dollar question that I don’t understand. But I do in my heart. It’s because I let him, and I was easy supply because he knew I would always be there no matter what. My heart fucking hurts. And I tell myself it would be so much easier if he could just have an honest conversation with me. But, this has never happened . It’s always spun on me, and I always have to take full blame for everything.

Is there a tweak that can disable silent/quite mode when receiving a call from specific phone number so the phone will ring on highest volume possible?

Hi, I’ve had two miscarriages in the last two years. The last one was a silent miscarriage and stopped growing at 5 1/2 weeks and I didn’t find out until 8 weeks. I passed the tissue in January of this year. Well here I am, pregnant with baby #3, praying this one doesn’t go meet its siblings. I had sore boobs, which is how I knew I was pregnant a week and a half ago. I found out 4/3/21. The doctors estimate me about 6 weeks and some change on how far along I am. I have very very mild cramps, nothing painful or really uncomfortable, just noticeable. It could also be that I’m paying way too much attention and being hypersensitive due to the fact I have not had a successful pregnancy. I have noticed some dull, yet sharp feeling pains in my pelvic area a few days ago that lasted on and off, a couple seconds each time, then a minute break, then a few more seconds. My breasts went from being extremely sore to barely at all if they are, or not sore at all. I had one day of tiny throw ups after eating, then just nausea since. I do still have food aversion from just about everything. I got my hcg levels tested today and they are 14,073. I feel like that’s a tad low, and I haven’t heard from my doctor if I am to go back in for another test to see if my levels are rising. I am extremely scared to lose this baby. Has anyone else had levels like this at 6 weeks and had a successful pregnancy? I’m thinking the worst on this.
