from that amazing almost symphonic piano opening to the rock and roll Jerry Lee Lewis style song, its just an awesome song. It's probably my favorite song off the original release of the record, with Skyline Pigeon being my favorite off the re release.
I feel this is a bit of an underrated gem from a legendary director but it's also a personal favourite of mine. Charlie was a classical pianist but now he pays his bills by playing at a dive bar and unfortunately he gets dragged into his own brother's mess with a couple of local gangsters.
I personally think that although you could call it a crime film, there's quite a lot of humour, tragedy, music and drama that allows it to overcome simply just solely being a crime film (one of my favourite moments that I found hilarious was when Charlie and Lena are forced into a car by the two mobsters after Charlie's brother and Lena pushes her foot onto the driver's pedal to cause the car to drive erratically, attracting the attention of a traffic cop, allowing Charlie and Lena a chance to casually walk off without question when the traffic cop pulls over the car).
I remember there being a fairly long sequence where a bar singer tries to bring the atmosphere of the bar back up once it is dampened by a chase by the two mobsters through the bar and that sequence reminded me quite a bit of classic Hollywood musicals, even if it's maybe not as clean-cut looking as classic Hollywood can be.
I won't spoil the tragic moments for those who haven't seen this film because they're pretty major spoilers, but I feel they're just as effective as the humorous moments too.

A guy is looking for a job and sees a bar advertising for a piano player.
He goes in and says, “I play, and I’d like the job.” The bar owner says, “Well, play me something so I can see what you’ve got.”
The guy sits down and plays beautifully. The owner is moved. “What do you call that?”
The guy says, “It’s something I wrote. I call it Bone Me Hard and Call Me Nancy.”
“Whoa!” says the bar tender. “You can’t say that in the bar! Play one more”. The next one is even better. “What’s that one called?” Says the bar tender.
I call that one, “Lick My Salty Ball Sack”, says the guy. “Oh man!” says the bar tender. “Look, you’re hired. But you can’t tell people the names of your songs, ok? Come back tonight. “
The bar is loud when he starts to play, but his original songs are so wonderful that everyone stops talking. People ask about the songs but he just shrugs. Patrons are tearing up. He plays for 45 minutes, then he says, “Folks, I’m gonna take a little break. Be back in 2 minutes.”
He grabs a water, goes to the restroom, takes a leak and is hurrying back to the piano when someone says, “Hey Mister! Do you know your dick’s hanging out of your pants?”
And without slowing down the piano player looks over his shoulder and says, ”Do I know it? I wrote it!”

I have been attempting to do SBIH the last few days and it has been going smoothly however some raids when I am scoped in on a player using the Valday my gun refuses to fire. I can remove my cross hair from said player and fire without issue however when it’s on a player it physically won’t shoot. Has anyone else come across this? Thanks!
