A list of puns related to "Self Renunciation"
Who is Zhuan? Well, let us journey together awhile.
You see, once upon a time, a man came from the West, which is Southeast of where many of you live, unless you are on the other side, in which case, it would be the opposite. Rest assured, he did travel laterally from one position to another that is different. From there he came, speaking with great dignitaries, men of cloth and great mind, deciding promptly to reject that in favour of a pet rock. I don't believe plastic googly-eyes were available at the time, so we have had to make do with our own imagination. In either case, they were glued together for 59 dog years.
Then a guy threw his arm at him, and the one-armed man told a poet about the rock guy before he was beat to death for pre-apostasy. The poet met a fourteen year old, and this is what they said:
>"Would that I might beg the Master's mercy, to grant unto me the method, by which I might free myself."
>"Who has bound you?"
>"None bind me."
>"Then why seek further for liberation?"
This was super radical for the overly astute teenager, who hung out with the old dude for nine years. After, the poet gave the young man some clothes and utensils, and a poem:
>>Seeds of blossoms, though reliant on earth,
>>By support of earth, seed blossoms to lifeโ
>>If it be, that there are none to sow the seeds,
>>Then the earth is used, with no blossom produced.

The young man became an old man, before giving the knick knacks to a robe carrier named "Nature"โnot the nature we normally think of, but one which is "not born." At least, that's what the kid said, and the old man was very much impressed.
Nature had a bunch of students, including an especially intelligent nobleman. Instead, Nature gave the rock guy's stuff to a kid who couldn't read, but who was really good at poem making, as well as cutting wood and hulling rice.
Rice boy threw rock guy's stuff in the garbage, and taught a bunch people, putting an end to the rule of two. These included some dude who tried to polish a tile into a mirror.
This so confused one of his bum-sore students that they ended up shouting 163 people into becoming official robe carriers themselves. One of them hung out alone on Hero's Peak, went deaf for three days one time, and also maybe wrote a bunch of rules for his massive congregation.

She's doing the end of the year interview circuits now; and this is a pretty nice one at that. You'll find that the link is paywalled; below you find a deepl translation:
-----------------------
Ms Reusser, you called us some time ago ...
Oh, and this is now in the newspaper? It's a pleasure, do you still feel like coming to me after this phone call.
At that time you complained about too little media presence. Which surprised us, because you had once said that you wished for less craving for recognition.
There would be the purely inward motivation - look at me, I'm the hottest. But there is also the other side: the way women present themselves and get the receipt from society. I know that if a man had brought my results on the World Tour, it would have been a big deal. But with me, little happened. That's why I called.
You spoke about the way women present themselves. What do you mean?
If I were a typical woman, I wouldn't have called. Women don't introduce themselves and say: I can do this and that. They are rather reserved. This stereotype is not by chance. But I don't want to be like that. I consciously say: Look, I have achieved all this.
You do enjoy the attention.
Yes, to some extent I do. And I don't want to be a woman who sinks into modesty. This modesty is one of the reasons why we are not further along. Men, on the other hand, can stand up and say what's what. Just recently I had an interesting conversation.
Tell me.
I was talking to a female doctor who has a PhD in her field. For years she has wanted a career change. Every day she thinks about it but doesn't take the step. Because she is afraid of not being good enough. How can she judge herself like that? Anyone would take her in hand in hand. This way of thinking is ingrained in women, it used to be the same for me. It needs a cultural change, it needs women who exemplify it.
Do women lack courage?
Cycling is a good example: there are many women who train. But racing? Never! At my place in Hindelbank (in the Emmental) there's a small race where you can just pedal around. But

I fancy very much Buddhism where renunciation and isolation is often encouraged since having family, wordly affairs can become a distraction in order to attain high spiritual attainments.
Also, correct me if I am wrong but Sikhisms goal is to attain liberation (mukti or nirvana for Buddhists) and its obstacles can be lust, greed, anger, attachment and pride.
So how is it possible to get rid of these obstacles while being precisely engaged in situations where lust and attachment appear? Whats the logic behind this?
Family, wife, kids...etc promote lust and attachment inevitably.
It's like trying to avoid consuming cocaine while being at a nightclub full of tempting cocaine lines.
OTOH, the Guru Granth Sahib mentions celibacy as something praiseworthy:
>Celibacy, chastity, self-discipline and the practice of truthfulness are obtained from the Perfect Guru, by meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
So how come household and having kids its still encouraged?
Thanks,
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

โI am probably a type Oโ said the rabbit.
Hi everyone. This is just a journal about where I've been in the past with this "awakening" thing, where I am now, and where I hope to be, with all my heart.
I find that right now I'm in the middle of some kind of dissolution of my identity again, and I've had a few of these over the years. I won't say I'm new to spiritual ideas or the idea of "awakening" or "enlightenment", far from it. I first started to wonder about the nature of reality when I was twelve or so, after I had a kind of epiphany about the way I was living and the dogma of my family's religion. I am twenty years old now. Twenty long years, twenty nothings, twenty blinks. And still I am a Child, always.
My very first epiphany at that young age of twelve blossomed out of the womb of a deep fear of God. I had been afraid and I was taught to be afraid growing up, but I hadn't felt a true consuming fear like that before, not really. So I prayed. I feared the fires of Hell still. I became more stringent with my religious rituals at first. Then gradually, eventually, inevitably, my reliance on them rolled off of my back like dead skin. Something still wasn't right.
Then the second epiphany came, and this was even more frightening. I don't know what triggered it but after I had become disillusioned with my heartless prayers, another random period of introspection came and out blasted a wave of clarity that washed over me so forcefully and so suddenly that it gave me a panic attack. And I realized, hyperventilating in my bedroom one morning, what if the way I've been taught is not the only way? What if religion wasn't everything? It's no wonder I felt so imprisoned, and in the years since that time I've realized the deep trauma that the knowledge of a judgmental God marred me with. From that point on I couldn't look back. It was time to begin the period of "seeking" as people would call it. As I went through high school this seeking involved my reading of any book I felt drawn to that purported to tell me what the truth of everything was (and of books I have read many, by this point). In my own brazen way I journaled about my findings in some desperate attempt to form a theory of everything, but of course I didn't really get anywhere and I soon realized I was only parroting ideas about what truth was from the lips of others, not coming to knowledge of what was Real through my own heart.
Because at some point I would understand, my moments of true and deep and resplendent clarity are thus far s

> The current Western interest in Buddhism focuses primarily on the path of Sages; especially attractive are the great variety of meditative practices not found in Western religions, such as Zen, Tibetan Buddhism, and Vipassana. This path seems to appeal to those who seek self-development, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-expression, self-control, and that is fine, but one must also know that this is contrary to the goal of Buddhist practice. As Mark Epstein correctly puts it, โIn Buddhism, the impenetrable, eparate, and individuated self is more of the problem than a solution.โ But no-self (anatta, anatman) does not simply mean the obliteration of the self; rather, it is attachment to the fiction of self that is to be negated.
> When Americans flock to Zen retreats, Tibetan Buddhist centers, and Vipassana training sessions, they are no longer strictly monastic, for the practices are modified to meet the needs of people who pursue their own professional or private secular lives. This diluted form of the path of Sages has both positive and negative consequences. On the one hand, a democratization of the Sangha is occurring, with various meditative techniques made available to a wider public, which is a positive development. But on the other hand, this path tends to become falsely elitist, because one imitates a monastic tradition that renounces family ties while actually maintaining a householderโs life. There is a contradiction here, and how the two will be integrated so that arrogance and hypocrisy will be minimized is still to be seen.
(Shin Buddhism: Bits of Rubble Turn to Gold by Taitetsu Unno)
I think a valuable point is being made here, even if it is definitely biased towards Pure Land anti-self-power views. Westerners tend to gravitate very strongly towards teachings previously reserved for monastics or otherwise highly dedicated laypeople. These teachings are being implemented in environments of casual practice, with none of the ethical discipline typically present in settings of serious practice. Only one of the six perfections is being practised, meditative concentration.
Is this a good thing which will lead to high benefit for people who would never accept traditional lay Buddhism? Or is it a situation ripe for false feelings of insight and enlightenment that will u

In doing the practice of investigation within the 4 foundations of mindfulness, the yogi starts to track objects from the point of inception onwards to the point of extinction. Initially clumsily, and then with skill and confidence. The yogi knows the object, knows the sense door where it comes from and how the object and its knowing is different for different objects and their knowing. Within the 3 foundations of mindfulness the yogi through tracking and knowing objects has already developed a lot of familiarity with objects, categories of objects, and the sense doors. The yogi has done a lot of juxtaposition between objects, between categories, between sense doors. The yogi has seen linkages or specific conditionality between objects and categories through seeing precedents and consequences.
This relentless object tracking naturally leads to the tracking of characteristics of objects. Awareness of sound naturally leads to the characteristics of sound like shrillness, volume, tonality. Awareness of body sensations naturally leads to the characteristics of body sensations like heat, coolness, friction, hardness, smoothness, stability, movement etc. This switch from object to characteristics of objects leads to a engagement of awareness with universal characteristics which are common to objects across categories and sense doors. Awareness starts to engage with the characteristic of impermanence. Impermanence fully experientially understood is the insight into Emptiness (or Shunyata). Nothing exists as far as the mind is concerned. The mind creates the world and it imputes meaning into the world. Minute by minute, moment by moment the world collapses and then is recreated. Meaning is seen to be given to the world rather than the world carrying any meaning by itself. From the impermanent characteristic of objects the mind switches to the characterist

โMorality for doctors.โThe sick person is a parasite on society. In a certain condition, living any longer is improper. Vegetating on, in cowardly dependence on doctors and treatments, once the meaning of life, the right to life has been lost, should incur the profound contempt of society. Furthermore, doctors should be the ones to convey this contemptโnot prescriptions, but every day a new dose of disgust with their patients . . . To create a new responsibility, the responsibility of the doctor, in all cases in which the highest interest of life, of ascending life, demands that degenerating life be shoved under and shoved aside with no mercy whatsoeverโfor example, as regards the right to reproduce, the right to be born, the right to life . . .
To die proudly when it is not possible to live proudly anymore. Death, chosen of oneโs own free will, death at the right time, with brightness and cheer, done in the midst of children and witnesses, so that it is still really possible to take oneโs leave, when the one taking leave is still there, with a real assessment of what one has achieved and willed, a summation of lifeโ all the opposite of the pitiful and appalling comedy that Christianity has made of the hour of death. One should never forget that Christianity abused the weakness of the dying for the sake of conscience-rape, and abused the manner of death itself for making value judgments on the per- son and the past!โ
What is necessary here above all, in spite of all cowardly prejudice, is to establish the correct, that is, the physiological evaluation of so-called natural deathโwhich ultimately is just another โunnaturalโ death, a suicide. One never perishes at the hand of anyone but oneself. Natural death is just death under the most contemptible conditions, an unfree death, a death at the wrong time, the death of a coward. Out of love for life, one should want a different death: free, conscious, without accidents, without surprises . . .
Finally, a recommendation for those gentlemen the pessimists and other dรฉcadents. It is not up to us to prevent ourselves from being born, but we can make up for this mistakeโfor sometimes it is a mistake. When one does away with oneself, one does the most honorable thing there is: it almost earns one the right to live . .

In theย fiveย years that Savarkar spent in London as a law student, he galvanised the revolutionary movement that sought total and complete freedom from British rule. From India to Europe, and even America, a network of bravehearts guided by him, made contacts with Irish, French, Italian, Russian and American leaders, revolutionaries and the press to bring British India to the forefront of global discourse. No doubt, the British governmentย categorisedย him as one of the most dangerous seditionists. Under an unfair Fugitive Offenders Act (FOA) of 1881 that did not apply to himย becauseย he was a bonafide student in London and not a fugitive,ย Savarkarย was deported to India and tried with no right to appeal or defence. He was slapped with two life imprisonments, totalling 50 years, to rot in the Cellular Jail of theย Andamansย along with his elder brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar. The British documents speak of how petrified they were of his very presence and hence wanted him as far away from the Indian mainland as possible.
Inย the Cellular Jail, he was meted the worst kind of punishments. Fettered in chains, flogged, condemned to six months of solitary confinement, made to extract oil all day being tied to the mill like a bullock, punished with standing handcuffs for days on end, lack of the most basic human needs such as toilets or water and fed with foul food that had pieces of insects and reptiles โ it was truly a devilโs island.
By 1913, Savarkar and several other prisoners began hunger strikes and non-cooperation in jail to protest against this inhuman treatment. The rest of India was blissfully unaware of the tortures their compatriots faced in Kaala Pani. Hence,ย articles were leaked out for publication in Indian newspapers. Savarkarโs clandestine attempts to start bombย manufacturingย in Port Blair alarmed the authorities. Finally, in October 1913, Sir Reginald H. In the second chapter, Krishna started his teaching with Jรฑฤna Yลga, described Karma Yลga in the middle and ended with the description of a Jรฑฤni. Arjuna is confused whether he should follow Jรฑฤna Yลga or Karma Yลga. Many people have the same confusion - which is better?
> 3.1 Arjuna said: If you think that knowledge is superior to action, O Janardana, why then do you ask me to engage in this terrible action, O Kesava?
> 3.2 With these apparently perplexing words you confuse my understanding, as it were; therefore, tell me definitely that one thing by which I may attain the Highest Goal.
Krishna advised Arjuna to do karma yoga, not as an option, but as a preparatory step; therefore Krishna's advice is: Arjuna, do karma yoga; purify your mind, gain knowledge and be free. The two cannot be compared because they are complementary to each other. It is like asking should I wear shirts or pants? Should I go to middle school or high school? You need both.
> 3.3 O sinless one, in this world a two-fold discipline was laid down by Me; by Jรฑฤna Yลga for the Sankhyas and by Karma Yลga for the Yogis.
> 3.4. By avoiding action, a person does not attain liberation. By mere renunciation also, one does not attain liberation.
Just avoiding action is not enough; indeed, it is impossible to avoid action. Just renunciation is not sufficient either.
> 3.5. Indeed, no one can ever remain without action even for a moment, because everyone is helplessly made to do action by the gunas born of prakแนti.
> 3.6 He who restrains his organs of action, but continues to dwell in his mind on the objects of the senses, deludes himself and is called a hypocrite.
> 3.7. Oh Arjuna! But, having restrained the organs (of knowledge) by the mind, he who pursues karmayลga with the organs of action without attachment excels.
Krishna describes a Karma Yogi who has attained self-knowledge (Jรฑฤni) as being truly independent.
> 3.17 But for that man who rejoices only in the Self, who is satisfied in the Self, who is content in the Self alone, verily there is nothing to do.
> 3.18. In this world, he has nothing (to gain) through action; nothing (to lose) due to inaction. Upon no being does he (have) any dependence for any purpose.
> 3.19 Therefore, always do without attachment the work you have to do; for by performing action without attachment a man reaches the Supreme.
