In CATWS, Sam talks about his past wingman Riley, who died on a mission. It is made relatively clear that his death was the reason Sam left the air force and started to help other veterans. Although, when Riley died is never stated. I am trying to come up with a rough timeline and the time in between Riley dying and Sam and Steve meeting is important, but I have little to go on. If anyone knows anything I have missed or has an approximate time, I would love to hear from you :)

Okay hear me out, this might be a bit far-fetched.
Riley and Sam Wilson were test pilots for EXO-7 Falcon and they were called for a mission in Afghanistan to capture Khalid Khandil. Riley was hit by an RPG during the mission and died in front of Sam's eyes. Sam Wilson shares this story with Steve Rogers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).
Given the fact that the Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) has been responsible for a lot of murders and terrorist activities across Marvel Comics history (such as the Starks' murders). Winter Soldier might have been involved in the debacle because we know Hydra and Shield worked in mysterious ways!
Now given that in the new Disney+ series TFATWS, we can see Bucky and Sam teaming up. This can be a little anecdote where Sam finds out Winter Soldier killed his friend Riley. Already knowing that Zemo is actually looking for such information, which would tear the superheroes from the inside. There can be two outcomes from this, 1. Sam gets enraged at Bucky, kind of the way how Tony Stark reacted in Civil War (2016) (tbh this is kind of lame). 2. Sam accepts the fact that the Winter Soldier murdered his friend and is able to distinguish between actual Bucky Barnes and the brainwashed supersoldier, this would make their bond more strong and the duo gets even more powerful.
Also how charming is the Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes' chemistry in the TFATWS trailers!
I saw a video of someone pointing out how it would be interesting to see Sam mention Riley on the show. Then I remembered that Sarah mentions she's a widow in the first episode. I know it's a tiny, almost irrelevant theory but could Riley be her husband? That would mean that Sam not only lost his partner but also his brother-in-law, which would make me think that mentioning him on the show would be important for the character.

- Riley Dixon (NYG, +10 to #9). Way to fucken’ go Riley Dixon. About as good a punt performance from the flame-haired assassin this week as you’re ever likely to see. Riley’s five punts gave up just one return yard to Tarik Cohen (CHI) who is second in the league in return yards this season, and netted a freakish 51.0 yards with four punts downed Inside the 20 and 3 inside the 10. WHAT ABOUT HIS STARTING FIELD POSITION THOUGH, I hear at least one person who asks about that every week cry. Well let me tell you. Dixon covered 87%, 83%, 86%, 91% and 70% of available field on his five boots, for a total average of 81.5% of Available Field. Pretty spectacular. I like that.
- Ryan Allen (ATL, +9 to #29). GREAT week for Ryan Allen. Not only did he move off the bottom of the rankings with a 6 punt, 50% In20, 41.3 NAY game, he’s also punted for THREE CONSECUTIVE WEEKS for the Falcons which means he’s almost outlived the great punting curse of 2019 which has already claimed Matt Bosher (3 games, groin), Matt Wile (2 games, quad), Kasey Redfern (3 games, bubonic plague).
