There were some lovely, moving moments in the memorial service of Concepcion Picciotto at Luther’s Place Church on Saturday.

Concepcion is known – with William Thomas, who died a few years ago – for leading what is apparently the longest protest in U.S. history: Against nuclear weapons in Lafayette Park, in front of the White House. She died last month.

As WTOP – the local news station – noted today: “Picciotto’s nuke vigil became a permanent fixture across from the White House for five consecutive presidents, including President Barack Obama, but not one of the presidents ever spoke to her.”

Tom Siemer, with trembling hands holding the microphone, sobbed “I built nuclear weapons for 23 years” and then that Concepcion “was so unselfish” – as she literally died to the end for peace, with failing health, virtually homeless, continuing the vigil. She was almost like a protester who immolates oneself, but in slow motion.

At the memorial service, the speakers included former CIA man Ray McGovern who noted the Washington Post‘s apparent proclivity for questioning Concepcion’s sanity, and asked who was the mad one here given the Post‘s apparent view that her desire to prevent nuclear war was at best quaint. Her lawyer, who spoke first and long, did some of the same, but seemed at one point to frame the nuclear threat stemming from the doctrine of MAD, mutually assured destruction, as a simple relic of the Cold War. He almost echoed a patronizing tone that one might hear from the Post, referring to his arguments with her, barely disguising an eyeroll.

There were glimmers of Concepcion’s radicalness certainly during the service – she wasn’t outright cooped into a banal liberal symbol as Martin Luther King often has been, but, critically, the word “Israel” was not uttered at the memorial in the church. This was incredible since it was hard to go three minutes talking with Concepcion without her talking about Israel – either its crimes or the incredible threat posed by its unacknowledged nuclear weapons. Her work stressed things that so few do: Israel is perhaps the greatest threat because it has a massive nuclear arsenal, refuses to sign the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, uses violence with incredible impunity and it is an expansionist settler colonial state.

Happy birthday to Everett Scott, who was born November 19, 1892.

Did you ever wonder who had the MLB record for the longest consecutive games played streak before Lou Gehrig? It was another Yankee: Everett Scott!

Gehrig’s streak began just a month after Scott’s ended — coincidentally, when Gehrig pinch-hit for the player who had replaced Scott in the lineup when his streak ended.

Lewis Everett Scott was born in Bluffton, Indiana, and to date is the only major leaguer to graduate from Bluffton High School (Go Tigers!). Foreshadowing his long consecutive games played streak, it was reported in David L. Porter's Biographical Dictionary of American Sports: Baseball that Scott was kept home the first week of school due to measles, then had perfect attendance all the way to graduation.

Scott's quiet demeanor and solemn expression earned him the nickname "Deacon," as he always looked like he was at a church service. Deacon was a popular nickname in the late 19th and early 20th century for players who were either devout churchgoers or acted like it -- they didn't drink, fight, or curse, or at least not as much as the typical ballplayer of that raucous era. Indeed, the Deacon credited the streak to his wholesome lifestyle, saying he didn't drink much, rarely ate heavy meals, and always went to bed early -- quite the contrast to the Babe!

Scott was the epitome of the good-field, no-hit shortstop. Even relative to the Deadball Era, his bat was below average: .246/.280/.309 (69 OPS+) in 4,277 career PA. His best season offensively, by oWAR, was his rookie year: he hit .239/.286/.301 (76 OPS+, 1.8 oWAR) in 603 PA. By OPS+, it was 1920, when he hit .269/.300/.369 (79 OPS+, 1.5 oWAR) in 615 PA.

Granted, shortstop -- particularly in the Deadball Era -- was not a premiere offensive position, but Scott was not much of a hitter when we compare him to his contemporaries: Dave Bancroft (career 98 OPS+), Donie Bush (91 OPS+), Roger Peckinpaugh (87 OPS+), Rabbit Maranville (82 OPS+), Larry Kopf (78 OPS+), Doc Lavan (75 OPS+), Ivy Olson (74 OPS+), and so on.

Another step had Fisk reappearing in his Puerto Rico condo, less than fifteen minutes after he first left. In his hand, he still carried the empty cup, which he flattened with a loud clap of his hands to rein in his growing excitement. He bounced on his toes, unable to remove the ridiculously huge grin from his lips.

He and Sam were going to be okay! It may take time, and it was never going to be perfect, but it wasn’t as hopeless as it had been an hour ago.

“Well, look at the cat that stole all the cream,” Nuncio chuckled from his kitchen, having helped himself to a beer.

“Better than that,” Fisk’s grin grew as he relived the last five minutes in his imagination. “Sam and I just had coffee together.”

Nuncio’s megawatt smile had to be the same as his. “Nice! Well done.” He rolled his wrist in a regal way that encompassed Fisk from head to foot. “If you want to maintain this happy afterglow, I can take care of our little human problem for you…”
