I read this about 3-4 years ago, but very unsure if it was new or not. The main character was friends with a cousin of the r royal family and a fellow male classmate who was hiding the fact he had magic (because everyone with magic was drafted into another regiment for the royal family?). The royal family cousin was very into reading and was the best female friend of the main character.
She had a crush on her direct commander and ended up saving his much younger brother by the end of the book by destroying a fighting arena.
Another scene was she had to dress up to attend a ball for spy reasons and tried to ask the guys (including her best male friend, and her commander, and her commander's friend) to help lace up her corset/dress, but none of them knew how, so she had to ask a tavern lady.
The magic system in this was weird? Always described to be a glowing blue, there was some underlying plotline about weed/drugs making it stronger. The main character's classmate/best male friend ended up getting involved and had to leave the plot halfway because of it.
The cover was orange and and a hand holding a sword.
Sorry for the long post! But it's frustrating because I remember literally everything BUT the title and I still can't find it(!!)
Remember when Tagaka said Hei ran held the record for most "accidental" kills by agni kai in the royal fire academy for girls? Well Azula once mentioned she and Ty Lee (and probably Mai), attended the academy. I'm dead certain that Azula participated in several duels of this practice and knowing her impulse to excell at everything, I'm thinking she broke Hei-ran's record.
This could explain part of the reason Azula has such a messed up view of how social interactions works, particularly given how the dvd commentary mentioned she befriended Mai and Ty Lee specifically to learn their skillsets (the former's aim and the latter's acrobatics), which I'm thinking she viewed as a survival tactic. This could also explain why Azula is so much more brutal than her brother, as unlike him she has experience at actively fighting to the death. Remember the volleyball match when she deduced the badass looking girl with the "silly pig tail" was weak on one leg? I'm guessing she using the tactics she learned from her duels.

Other information
I am planning to apply for KABK Fine Arts and would like to know a little bit more about their expectations concerning the portfolio and how difficult it is to actually get accepted.
My vision of art is a bit avant-garde, although I will surely provide works that demonstrate technical skill, I still am concerned about how they would respond to my portfolio/work. My aesthetic outlook and communication will be reflected by the portfolio but I am a bit curious about how much they value authenticity compared to technique. Depending on that I would either focus more on demonstrating technical capabilities rather than %100 going with my vision. Because I really want to get accepted and even though my passion urges me to do the latter, I want to submit something that really elevates my chances of getting admitted.
Any information about KABK Fine Arts / previous experiences would be greatly appreciated. Especially people who applied for it before,, your opinion is very valuable to me.

Our nation lies very close to the equator, firmly in the tropics and very close to the equator. As such, research into the science of tropical areas is of vital importance. The Rajahs of Sarawak have always been very fond of botany and zoology, and the oldest public institution in Sarawak is indeed the Sarawak Museum (which functions more like a research institute at a university than a museum these days).
While Sarawak does not (yet) have any universities, we do have a small class of academics who work part-time in areas of interest, usually teachers or civil servants. The Maharajah will formalise an unofficial gathering of these people into the first Royal Academy of Sarawak - the Sarawak Royal Academy of Tropical Science.
The SRATS will be "divided" into 4 sections:
- Tropical Zoology
- Tropical Botany
- Tropical Geology
- Tropical Oceanography
These sections will not be formal divisions, but rather informal groupings of interested academics. Members of the SRATS will be entitled to a small monthly stipend paid by the Maharajah, to give them time out from their "real work" to focus on academic studies and produce research results that can be of benefit to Sarawak and all of humanity. The Maharajah has assigned £10,000 of his own money to be invested into a fund which will provide small grants for specific projects of importance.
The First Projects
The first research projects approved and funded by the Maharajah's Fund are the following:
- Sarawak National Bathymetric Survey, a project to map 100% of the immediate coastal shelf up to 24 nautical miles of the Sarawak coast;
- Rhinoceros Hornbill & Brahminy Kite Conservation Project, a project to locate areas of Sarawak which are of high importance for the Rhinoceros hornbill and the brahminy kite (two birds of crucial national importance) and to recommend conservation areas for them;
- Elaeis guineensis Cultivation Project, a project to analyse the parts of Sarawak most suited to the cultivation of the Elaeis guineensis or oil palm.
It is hoped that these projects can inspire future scientists all over Sarawak.
