Roger Kaufman Puns

This week on The Jerry Lawler Show podcast, we had Andy Kaufman's brother Michael on the show. Coolest thing was he found an essay that Andy wrote in 1981 about falling in love with pro wrestling back in the mid-50s on TV. I transcribed it, it's about his all-time hero, Buddy Rogers, who he referred to as Golden Boy.

January 15, 1981 - 2:08am - Green Valley Road

Golden Boy

I remember the first time I ever saw the Golden Boy. It was on a local television show in which he was wrestling for the undisupted championship of the world. I had been turning channels looking for something suitable for my little brother and myself to watch while my parents were away for the evening. It was past our bedtime, but the babysitter was on the phone with someone, I think her boyfriend, so we stayed up and watched TV. As we turned the dial, we stopped at each show that was on, watched it for a few seconds, and then changed to another one. When we came upon the wrestling show, we sat there mesmerized and watched the whole thing as Golden Boy kicked and choked and cheated his way into the championship behind the referee's back. After he won, he strutted around the ring with his newly won crowd and flexed his muscles as the crowd booed. That night, my brother and I became addicted.

For the next two years, Golden Boy remained champ, He would use every trick in the book to win his matches, and when he couldn't win, he would purposely get disqualified so he wouldn't lose the championship, because the rules stated that a title could not change hands on a disqualification. The public hated him and hoped for the day when he would lose. However, my brother and I got caught up in the man's charisma and became avid fans of his. Sometimes, he had a manager who interfered in his matches, stabbing his opponents with his cane if they were besting the champion. We loved watching this manager brag obnoxiously during interviews, as Golden Boy nodded his head in agreement, flexed his muscles, and said intermittently - "That's right, daddy."

One time he was supposed to jump from the top rope onto the stomach of Rick Davis, the man who claimed to have a cast-iron stomach. Davis claimed that nothing, including Golden Boy's famed kneedrop from the top rope could penetrate or hurt his cast-iron stomach. Golden Boy claimed he would be able to hurt Davis, and as he climbed the top rope, tension grew. At the moment Golden Boy jumped down, he landed his knee directly on the windpipe of Davis's neck.

#Background

Baseball has always been a connective tissue between my father and I. I was raised as a Cubs fan and Wrigley Field became the ballpark I visited most often. Wrigley Field felt special to me because, as I would learn, it largely looked the same as when my father went to games when he was younger...save for some flood lights on the roof. At some point, after visiting Wrigley Field and then seeing the Cubs play away games in ballparks that were each unique in various ways, I began a dream about seeing a game at every MLB park. While it may have taken me a long time, I am proud to say that I finally fulfilled that dream and saw a home game for every MLB team.

Some administrative notes: For the duration of this project, I was either working full time or going to school full time, plus I had to pay for everything out of pocket. I was sidelined by life events, rain postponements, and a global pandemic. Consequently, I had to chip away at this goal little by little over time. For those keeping score at home, I decided that my goal would be to see a home game for every MLB team as opposed to making the goal seeing every ballpark and forever be chasing an uncompleted list as stadiums come and go. The only current MLB stadium I have not visited is Globe Life Field in Texas because I visited its predecessor. While I have been to a handful of minor league ballparks, my stadium journey remained strictly a major league pursuit and I do not intend to reopen the project until the oft-mentioned expansion occurs and there are new MLB teams. Finally, I did work in two separate visits to Cooperstown to see the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Now having been to a home game for all 30 MLB teams, I could not resist the urge to rank them against one another. Below is the list - no scientific scoring method, just straight from my ever-growing gut. Arbitrary ranking aside, I believe my list retains a consistency with the type of characteristics I appreciated in ballparks. Like any rankings list, I know everyone has different perspectives and life experiences, so I am sure there will be some disagreements and discussions to be had.

tl;dr: I like ballparks. I have a hokey explanation for why I like ballparks. I have now seen a home game for each MLB team and, in efforts to provide some off-season content, I have ranked the ballparks for your ridicule below.

1. Oracle Park (San Francisco Giants)

The setting is what gives this ballpark

Been thinking about each actor's most brutal moment in their tenure as Bond. What are some of your favorite moments per actor?

Connery: Professor Dent's death. Love how Connery was waiting for him and shoots him casually. Such an iconic moment in the series.

Lazenby: Ski Chase from Piz Gloria. It was when Bond whacked one of Blofeld's men with his Ski and sent him falling down the mountain. Lazenby didn't have a ton of brutal moments but this was the closest from my recollection.

Moore: Kicking down Locque's Car, "No Head for Heights." Being the most light-hearted Bond actor, it's kind of scary seeing Sir Roger capable of doing something so cold.

Dalton: Lighting Sanchez on fire. LTK remains the most violent film in the series and there's a ton of brutal moments. But this one does it, Bond gets revenge in a poetic fashion as well as being the only time I've ever seen him lighting someone on fire.

Brosnan: Killing Dr. Kaufman. Brosnan's Bond kills his villains in brutal fashion and there was a lot of to pick. But seeing Brosnan's face as he turns Dr. Kaufman's gun to his head is frightening. "Wait! I'm just a professional doing a job!" "Me too." *bang!*

Craig: Breaking Safin's Arm. This was the moment that lead me to create this post. Everyone at the theater gasped when that happened. Also, look at Safin's reaction when Bond breaks his arm, he just squirms like crazy which emphasizes the moment. This and Sanchez's death in LTK are the only times I thought Oh shit! He literally did that?!?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
