Hey kids! It's the spooky season and time to share your views with the group. All are welcome!
Donβt Breathe 2 (2021) Nine years later, our blind, old army vet is teaching a daughter of his own the art of self-defense and turkey basting. A group of kidnappers with bad haircuts break in with sights on the girl and action follows. The first half felt like a ho-hum home invasion flick, but when the plot shifts to outrageous, itβs for the better. Rodo Sayagues who co-wrote the first one as well as the Evil Dead remake with Fede Alvarez gets his first shot in the directorβs chair. Good enough to watch once.
V/H/S 94 (2021) Forth installment of the above average anthology series hits the mark again with a news crew in a sewer, an unattended wake, and domestic terrorists with a supernatural weapon. All three were pretty good and have solid endings to boot. Then thereβs Timo Tjahjanto, the Indonesian filmmaker, director of the May the Devil Take You films, and who dominated the second V/H/S film with the spectacular βSafe Havenβ segment, who does it again in grand fashion with βThe Subjectβ, about a mad scientist whoβs hybrid experiments make Frankensteinβs Army look like a stroll in the park. See it for Timo, he wonβt let you down!
Old 37 (2015) Genre faves Bill Moseley and Kane Hodder are sibling ambulance drivers who brutalize victims of auto accidents when the opportunity presents itself. Their targets are a group of highly unlikable teens, even the one youβre supposed to like bitches to her mom about getting breast implants. Did you know when you get breast implants, they bleach your hair and do your nails before releasing you from the hospital so you can go on a date the same night? Well anyway, I didnβt think this was very good.
Black Sunday aka The Mask of Satan (1960) Mario Bava's gothic masterpiece about a vampire/witch (Barbara Steele in a dual role) who is awakened from her tomb after 200 years, and attempts to inhabit the body of a descendant. The pre-credit sequence alone is worth the price of admission, and Babs awaking from the dead with spike-holes in her face is what nightmares are made of. One of the best of its kind.
Joe Bobβs Halloween Hoedown Joe Bobβs guests were Jason Blum and David Gordon Green to promote the upcoming Halloween Kills. Probably the longest interview segment to date if memory serves, but good stuff. And the great, though not particularly Halloweenie movies were:
*Angel (1984)

First thought that entered my mind walking out of Donβt Breathe 2, was the realization that this film was going to be divisive among audience members, and after seeing scores like 2.6 on Letterboxd, 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 48 on Metacritic, I feel justified in saying my initial thoughts were correct. This film is also going to be tough to discuss without some spoilers for this one and itβs predecessor, so for early thoughts, both are worth seeing in my opinion. The first is a lot more crowd pleasing, and the sequel takes some interesting risks that I think really help it stand out a lot among movies of its kind. Iβll try to remain vague going forward, but if you want to go in ahem blind, then probably avoid going forward.
The initial backlash reminds me a bit of The Last of Us Part II. A beloved first installment thatβs followed by a sequel that really goes hard on the idea of making characters, who initially seem despicable, to then show that depth and still ask the audience to not agree with their bad deeds. The Blind Man kidnapped the woman who killed his child and forced her to be artificially inseminated by him to give him another child. Thatβs a lot worse than what our protagonists were doing, which was robbing homes to be able to move out of Detroit. Both doing bad things, but one deed is significantly worse than the other, which is what made The Blind Man such a great and intimidating villain. Many are not going to be able to be okay with this film. The thought of his deeds are going to always stick out, no matter what his later intentions are, and thatβs acceptable. The film isnβt asking anyone to forget or be okay with it, but an opportunity to add nuance to a character we view as horrid from the onset. Similar to Abby in The Last of Us Part II.
One tool I really appreciate the filmmakers used was the dog Shadow, thatβs returning tomorrow the first film. I distinctly remember having the fear from the Rottweiler and seeing him as more of a killing machine and a major obstacle for the characters, but with Donβt Breathe 2, Shadow is a character the audience feels more anxiety for and worries about his fate. Itβs sort of a mini-Blind Man, which works since heβs a sort of extension of him. Itβs a small aspect, but one I really think helped me start to accept something sort of uncomfortable.
The decision to go in this route actually comes off pretty brilliant. I always thought Donβt Breathe and Green Room as slashers for the 2010 era. They h

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
In this post, I will look into Sony/Columbia Pictures, the studio that gave up on 2020 once COVID-19 happened. Besides that, the studio is known for Ghostbusters, Men in Black, Spider-Man, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and Venom. Some of the best films of all time were made by Columbia Pictures like Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Strangelove, Taxi Driver, The Shawshank Redemption, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (the last two were released under Sonyβs continued ownership of Columbia Pictures). Most recently, they have been well known for Spider-Man: Far From Home, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Zombieland 2: Double Tap, Jumanji: The Next Level, Little Women, and Bad Boys for Life.
Sony has actually been doing pretty well in recent years, especially with the success of MCU Spider-Man and Jumanji. Sony has been able to kick off two Spider-Man spinoff franchises with the success of both Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Honestly, the βSony Pictures sucksβ idea doesnβt make sense nowadays with great films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Little Women. And then 2020 happened.
The Grudge - The year started with the Grudge. And boy was it such an awful start. This was the first film since 2017βs Mother! to get a Cinemascore grade of an F. Fortunately for Sony, the film was still financially successful, making $50M on a budget of $14M.
Bad Boys for Life - This was the film that no one expected to be the highest grossing film of 2020 for the first half of the year. Bad Boys for Life was well received by critics compared to the previous two Bad Boys films. I was expecting this film to make $300M at most, but this made more than what anyone expected. The film made $62M on its opening weekend and would go on to make $204M domestically. The worldwide total would be $427M, becoming the biggest January release of all time.
Fantasy Island - The film is based off the 70s television series of the same name, with a horror element to it. While the film was critically panned, the film made $49M on a budget of $7M, being a box office success. Itβs a good thing Sony had Blumhouse to have the budget be this low, or this film wouldnβt have been so profitable.
Bloodshot - This film was supposed to give Sony another superhero franchise that wasnβt Spider-Man or Venom. And it wasnβt well received by critics like Venom. But unlike Venom, Bloodshot was only able to make $37M on a budge
