I love these types of songs that are chill but powerful and still give that wall of sound effect. Genre is not necessarily important but I like my prominent bass lines.
#451 Roberta Flack-First Take
So my exposure to the sensual Roberta Flack was her biggest hit βKilling Me Softly With His Songβ So I was excited to see this on the list just to check it out. Oh my was I blown away by her debut album. Which was recorded in only 10 days. This jazzy, Soulful gem might be the most underrated debut album of all time. First impressionsΒ was of course Flackβs incredible voice which is absolutely amazing. Her backing band of accomplished jazz musicians are god damn perfection. The mood on this album is laid backΒ jazzy soul. The albumβs theme of social consciousness is sprinkled throughout years before other black artists would take the mantle. Itβs so hard to try to find the highlight of the album because all the songs here are highlights. I was just blown away by it. I mean, ifΒ I had to pick my favorite tracks, the opener βCompared To Whatβ, her reworking of the traditional gospel song βI Told Jesusβ and the beautiful cover of Leonard Cohenβs βHey, Thatβs No Way To Say Goodbyeβ. All simply beautiful. I have listened to this album from beginning to end at least five timesΒ and have found something new to love about it each time. I did a deed dive into her discography as well check out her other albums βChapter Twoβ and βQuiet Fireβ if you want to hear one of the great voices who needs more love.
