Iβve noticed that the wild turkeys now known as the βDowling Turkeysβ are gaining traction here, so I wanted to share the story behind how these turkeys came about in the neighborhood.
I live next to one of the neighbors (Iβll be keeping his whereabouts confidential) that used to own a small turkey pen in his backyard back in the late 90s. Back then he had a hobby of raising animals and during that time the area wasnβt as developed as it is now. Some areas still had some dense vegetation. I believe he started out with a few young female and male turkeys and kept on raising them until he eventually released them when they became mature enough. That generation of turkeys used to hang around his yard and perch upon his house from time to time. Later on they migrated somewhere else for which he did not know.
On November 10th, 2020, these turkeys reemerged in his yard again. However, he believes that they must be a new generation of turkeys since they do not recognize him anymore. But interestingly enough, they seem to still recognize his backyard and graze in it. He believes that a few females may be resting in the Walnut Creek wooded area while the two famous male turkeys go about their business. Myself and him think that the two male turkeys somehow became very accommodated to humans but see themselves in the reflections of cars as possible offending male turkeys (which may be why they block the roads). So far according to other locals and the police, there isnβt much that can be done about the turkeys since the DNR apparently cannot capture them.
And so, the turkeys go about their day as our speed enforcers in the neighborhood.
Any impression you have on that school, or any other high schooler in the Des Moines area would be nice. Also, is it true that you can drive at 14.5 yrs old to school (with parental permission)?! If so that's kinda cool.
