A list of puns related to "Review Of General Psychology"
I will graduate in the spring with a master's in general psychology with a psychometrics concentration. I did not plan to get my doctorate but upon researching potential jobs and certification requirements in the state I'll be living in (Massachusetts), it's looking quite bleak. Any advice on potential career paths that pay more than I could make remaining in the classroom as a teacher?
Edit: A huge thank you to everyone that replied with constructive feedback. You've all given me more to think about and more importantly hope over my despair spiral last night. I appreciate the support and input!
hey! iβm interested in attending mtu this fall but iβm still deciding on which school to choose. i was wondering what the psychology program was like since it sounded interesting from a virtual college visit.
in addition to the psych program, whatβs it like going to mtu as a woc? i know that the study body is mostly white males so i was just wondering if anyone could share their experience. iβm also interested hearing just about anyoneβs experience including any tips or thoughts on dorms, dining halls, etc. :)
Hi everyone! As Round 2 starts tomorrow, I wanted to know a bit more about this module by Prof Zhang Weiyu. Iβve searched this sub Reddit and online sources but I didnβt find much on the workload and how assessment/grading is like.
As such I would like to ask for reviews regarding:
- workload (does it commensurate for a 4MC mod - how was the Flipgrid videos and class part - was it intense)
- how was the newsflash assignment marked? (do the tutors give some guidance at the start?)
- how was the teaching style like?
Thanks everyone, and all the best for tomorrow!
I have been feeling really bored lately and want to make new friends but dont know how to while staying at home. I hope i find friends here soon...
Can someone that has taken PSYCHOLOGY OF CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS before give me a review of this course?
I have pretty heavy classes next semester so I'm looking for a light course. Thanks!
Hello there! I am a psychology student at Wake Forest University and I am currently working on a project/product centered around self-awareness. I started working on the product/project with a buddy of mine, who attends IU, just over a year ago. It started as a tool for individual usage, but after getting a lot of positive feedback on our product by many psychologists, (many saying they would use it in their own practice), we are now looking to pivot the product to have clients use this with their therapists and psychologists.
So I am here today because as we dive into this industry, we want to understand what problems lie in therapy. We want to better understand the problems therapists face in their own practice. So I am starting this thread to hopefully get some answers to that.
Feel free to comment about anything, but here are some of our general questions:
We all know about the replication crises in the social and behavioral sciences. But what are some core findings that we both likely would not have known had research not been conducted AND that have been confirmed by a substantial enough body of research to be considered axiomatic?
As an example: there are decision-making processes at work in the human mind that are below the level of conscious awareness, and these processes often have a greater impact on what we do than our active, deliberative processes. I think that is a good one.
Hello!
I'm from India. I'm considering this program at Bath for my master's, would like some info on how it's been for anyone who's in the program, or is an alumni.
In terms of what the career prospects look like, if the placement option is useful, how long it took you to land a full time job after the program, scholarship opportunities, how the professors are, and any advice you may have; would be a great help!
Thanks so much!

My partner and I are looking for books on Humiliation/Powerplay/BDSM in general. We are more interested in psychological aspects than "how-to" instructions. In particular on Humiliation and Powerplay while struggling with selfworth/selflove/mental illness.
Topics like:
-healing/therapeutic power: can certain play help us healing/coping and is this a healthy or unhealthy coping mechanism?
-embracing or avoiding a connection between BDSM play and rl struggles?
-emotional and psychological safety before, during and after play.
Some background: Me (f, d) and my partner (m, s) have been getting into powerplay, verbal humiliation and roleplay. It started as a fun playful thing. But recently we accidentally reached a deeper level of connection that kind of blurred the lines between pretend and reality and resurfaced self-worth struggles of my partner. While the experience itself was positive for both of us, my partner has had a hard time with his mental health again since several weeks. He sometimes feels like the role he was playing in the scene stuck with him irl and now has all those negative thoughts about himself attached to it. We were both suprised how heavily it affected him and are now scared to play again. So currently we are avoiding all play. (He is meeting new therapists already btw.)
Maybe you want to share your book recommendations, advice and/or experiences? Thanks :)
Because I hate that I am. Right now I'm trying to deal with cognitive dissonance and it pushes me into a negative existential spiral. I'm always obsessing about the ultimate truth and being as objective as possible. I think I have a phobia of self-deception and as a human I think we're all really prone to self-deception and confirmation biases. Sometimes I hate that my brain works this way and I look at other people who just take things for face value and believe in their own believes, cognition and emotions while I drive myself crazy and full of existential dread. I would've been so much easier to not be someone who constantly questions and second-guesses things and myself in order to get the most objective and nuanced picture of something. Sometimes it feels like I'm trying to escape or overpower what it means to be human, or try to outsmart the human intelligence, or that I'm so "smart" that I become dumb and suffer (I don't think I'm smart but I've heard and read that if you think along these lines that I described you have a higher chance of being intelligent, whatever that means)
I don't know. I've posted about this before and remember that people talked about how this could be a C-PTSD thing.
Just wanted to get some input from my fellow CC folks. With spring semester coming up I have a pretty loaded schedule with some challenging classes. However, I have a choice between these two classes and want to make sure that I choose whichever one will be easier. I donβt want to make this semester more stressful than itβs already going to be. TIA
Books I've read, thoroughly enjoyed an reread are:
Silence of the Lambs, by Thomas Harris
Red Dragon, by Thomas Harris
The Monster of Florence by Mario Spezi and Douglas Preston
The Hanged Man,, by Sheldon Kopp
Ethics, by Aristotle
1984, by George Orwell
Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas
Children of Blood and Bone +Children of Virtue and Vengeance, by Tomi Adeyemi
Moby Dick, by George Melville
Fear and Trembling, by Soren Kierkegaard
Any suggestions?
The best way..
Apologies to everyone who is extremely over talking about this situation! I subscribe to this channel, and this guy (who is a legit psychologist, not like some Dr. Phil charlatan type) reviews reality TV couples, and also does some interesting deep dives into other psychology topics. I mostly watch for his 90 Day FiancΓ© reviews. Anyways! Here he is giving his professional opinions on Greg and Katie. Heβs very fair and balanced I think, and you will feel vindicated if you strongly disagree with Katieβs usage of the term βgaslighting.β I just thought some of you might enjoy!
In my free time, I enjoy reading about psychology online and watching YouTube videos on the subject. I would like to read some decent books on psychology, but I'm struggling to find good ones.
I had a look on Amazon and the ratings are often mixed. I can't seem to find any books that seem worth reading. I don't mind if it's a textbook (like you may have if you studied psychology at university), a book written by a professional criminal profiler, a psychiatrist, books on various mental health conditions, neurological disorders etc. I am interested in various branches of psychology.
So, can you guys help me? If so, they will go on my Christmas list this year/I'll buy them with my amazon vouchers, which I always get for Christmas :D
If your lifestyle is that of an obligate parasite feeding on sentient creatures, that's got to give you a strange outlook on life and on your neighbors...
Iβm not going to act like Iβm anything close to an expert in psychology and I hope I donβt come across as having a holier-than-thou attitude towards psychology but I would like to rant about this. Thereβs lots of misinformation and models that have been discredited by psychologists that linger on with the public and become substantially more popular than psychology constructs that are actually well-supported by evidence and it bothers me how people latch on to these theories without doing the bare minimum of actual research that would tell them pretty immediately to not give them any credit.
The two biggest examples of this are pretty obviously MBTI and the VARK model of learning styles. MBTI is, unfortunately, probably the most popular personality test on the planet (at least in the west) even though loads of research has come out on it criticizing its lack of reliability, poor factor analysis, false dichotomies, insufficient internal validity, among other reasons. Iβm not going to pretend like I have a firm grasp on zombie theory but my guess would be that this test is so popular because it gives you such a clear-cut answer of βwho you areβ and people hate ambiguity when it comes to their identity. The Big 5 model measures all of its traits by dimensions and not dichotomies, which while being much more in line with personality differences in real life, isnβt as appealing because it doesnβt give very concrete answers.
But the thing is, at least from what Iβve seen since I started studying psychology, this discipline rarely gives concrete answers and basically everything is on a sliding scale. Presenting personality traits as dichotomies goes against the very nature of personality. And it just bothers me that a test that virtually no psychologist takes seriously is so much more popular and well-known by the general public than a model that has actually had long-lasting empirical support. Now I know that the big 5 test is by no means perfect and Iβm not saying that it is, but MBTI shouldnβt be used at all in my view. Iβve heard people say that they just use it to categorize themselves and others for fun, but that doesnβt stop you from treating people differently based on what box you put them in and unconsciously acting in ways that support what personality type you were given while avoiding acting in ways that arenβt in line with it. Confirmation bias is a real thing.
As for VARK, I think my old professor who was asked about this once could explain i
