[Rooks] I interviewed Rasheed Wallace in 2017, asked about the '17 Warriors. He said his Pistons would "run through them. not even close" & would beat them in a 7 game series. His team might have done a good job defensively BUT this idea that the old era is forever paramount has to end.

Rasheed Wallace on how Lebron would do in his era

Rasheed Wallace on Lebron playing in his era: " I don't think he would be as successful as he is now. It was a whole different era back then".

Hand checking only existed in Lebron's rookie year, In his rookie year Lebron averaged 21-6-6 on 48TS%.

Do you think Lebron would have been better or worse in the late 90's and early 2000's?

You could make a case he would be a bit worse with handchecking, You could also make a case he would be better since it was mostly 1 on 1 defense and Lebron would dominate.

Early-2000's Player Discussion: Rasheed Wallace (9/17/74), Chauncey Billups (9/25/76)

We had a discussion a couple months ago about expanding the timeframe for this sub past 2000 (link), so we're trying this out. I'm all about us having some discussions about events, teams, and players from the first half of the 2000's (or really up through the '06 season for a few reasons discussed at the link above), but I don't want it to turn into simplistic, overly-discussed topics. Here is a list of all the early-2000's player discussions so far.

Here's a little info about the most notable early-2000's players with a birthday in mid/late-Sept:

  • Rasheed Wallace (career stats) - Sheed was a 4x All-Star ('01 & '02 w/Port, '06 & '08 w/Det) and a key piece to the '04 Pistons championship. He was an intense post player with an unconventional skill set (interior D and 3-pt shooting), known for his confrontations with opponents and referees that resulted in numerous technical fouls, suspensions, and fines. Despite all that, he was an incredibly smart & cerebral player who became a Pistons assistant coach a few months after retiring.

  • Chauncey Billups (career stats) - Billups is most well known for being the Finals MVP for the Pistons' 2004 championship run, but his statistical peak didn't occur until a few years later; his 5 ASG nods were from '06-10 and his inclusion on 3 All-NBA squads came during the same time period (2nd-team in '06, 3rd-team in '07 and '09). He was the epitome of a "better in the playoffs" PG: great defense, gritty, smart, head-strong, good shooter, and all-around clutch.

Rasheed Wallace: I felt as though we wasted three good years with [Flip Saunders] being the head coach

"We had, rest in peace, Flip (Saunders) as our coach," Wallace recalled. "I was just letting the guys know I wasn't too keen on Flip and his coaching style. Some of the other guys in the locker room, they were cool with it, but I just let them know some of the things that were happening, for me that window was closing."

"And I felt as though we wasted three good years with him being the head coach than it would have been with Larry Brown," Wallace, then age 32, said.

Pistons center Rasheed Wallace, left, has a few comments with coach Flip Saunders, right, as he comes out of the game against the Wizards on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at the Palace. After some additional prodding from Le Batard and co-host, fellow former ESPN personality and former Phoenix Suns scout Amin Elhassan, Wallace provided a little more unfiltered version of his locker room "speech."

"It was a bunch of f-bombs and a bunch of m-f'ers and f-this and f-that, bull(expletive) and all the other cuss words you can think of," Wallace said. "My main emphasis was, I felt as though we were wasting our time, we were wasting these years with him, who, to me, wasn't a good coach.

"To win a championship, it takes more than just one or two All-Stars, you gotta have an All-Star coach. Your coach actually has to know X's and O's on what he's doing, and for me, personally, I just didn't think Flip had that."

"(Saunders" had success with some of those plays in Minnesota, playing with (Kevin Garnett), a lot of that 452 twist and 52 twist," Wallace said. "But that doesn't work for every team. And he thought that, with K.G. and I being the same somewhat type of player, that it could work for us. Nah, that (expletive) ain't work."
