Why?
Let's treat the King like a queen for a while. Now, if it attacks any other queen, it's also under their attack and thus in check. So we have to put the King in an optimal square and put Queens everywhere, where the King-queen doesn't attack. So what are these optimal squares and how many queens can we ultimately put?
Notice, that no matter where we put our King, it will "occupy" exactly 8 squares horizontally and 8 squares vertically. The lines are overlapping, so this gives us 15 in total. Now onto the diagonals.
The problem with them is that the number of squares occupied can differ. By logic the most optimal squares are the edge ones. And which of them are the most optimal? The answer is, surprisingly, every single one of them.
Let's place our King on a corner square. We can see it occupies 8 squares on this diagonal. For the sake of simplicity, we'll call it NED (North East Diagonal). If we were to move it one square in any direction (along the edges), we'd "remove" one square from NED and add one square to previously empty NWD (North West Diagonal). To visualise this removal, imagine the initial NED moving along the edges and then being cut by the chessboard size. You can visualise the addition similarly.
So no matter what we do, as long as we stay close to the edges, our total occupied squares changes by 0, thus remaining 8.
Now, to our 15 occupied squares we have to add another 8. However, like before, one square was already counted, so we only add 7, giving us total of 22.
This tells as, that an optimally placed King "occupies" exactly 22 squares, making the other 64 - 22 = 42 free.
Another reason 42 is the ultimate answer.

Driving through Bath to get home out of town from a client. I was driving through Queens Square in Bath. It was a mid sized tourer high clearance style bike. Stolen by a gang of kids on scooters. I saw them outside the Francis Hotel trying to jump start the bike.
They headed off Queen square down the A367, going through two sets of reds nearly hitting people crossing the road. Then turning right onto Midland bridge road.
There's CCTV on those roads.
I called 999 from the car, police are coming to me now to get the dashcam. Once I've seen the dashcam on a bigger screen I'll be able to see bike make and model I hope.

Edit: More details, here's a couple of screenshots of the stolen bike. Not very clear because I've had to zoom right in. Can anyone tell the make and model from the blurriness?

One of the thief's scooter is a black Yamaha YBR 125 plate: VK60 FZV
Police have taken the details but said they can't chase the thieves because Bath doesn't have any pursuit police cars, they have to call them in from Bristol and they didn't have any either.
I tend to get the 14 home, back in the office after a few years and all the 14 bus stops in town have "This service does not operate here". That being said I still see people sitting at some stops waiting, and i've waited about 10 mins myself and seen nothing.
I know it stops a few times on the way in, just curious.
