King George VI is often presented as a 'reluctant' King, a naval man 'pressed into service' after his brother's abdication. Is this an exaggeration? Was this propaganda pushed by the Royal family?
In pop culture George VI is often contrasted with his 'flash' brother Edward VIII, with the latter a suave and scandalous figure and the former a modest unassuming family man. But George (or Albert) was still second in line to the throne, and grew up with his father George V etc.
Is his portayal as unassuming exaggeration as part of pop culture contrasting him with Edward? Was it deliberately pushed to save the monarchy?
