For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

Tod cricked the muscles in his neck and rolled his shoulders. Standing 5'2" and weighing 120 lbs, he was the most massive warrior in his village. He was staring down at another village in a valley next to the ocean and a river... a Neanderthal village... however, his people simply called them the Giants. The giants were easily twice as big as Tod, not to mention smarter, faster, and tougher.
Tod always cursed to himself when he saw them. Why had the goddess, Voluptuous Venus put such a challenge in their world?
He caught a glint of light from the other side of the Valley - a particularly smooth piece of flint was able to flash the light of the moon, and it made a great way to signal at night. The one at the other end of the light was Tog, Tod's sister. She was the second greatest warrior in the tribe, weilding the great spear, Vitash, which she made herself from tying the other piece of that flint to the end of her spear. That one change to her weapon made her almost as deadly as Tod.
Down below, the the Giants' fire crackled. That's why they were here. Slowly, every so slowly, he creeped down towards the encampment. Sliding up to the side of the hut, and listening to what was going around the corner, he heard them all gathered around their midnight light. He listened for a bit.
"Oh please, it's absolutely positively the worst theing evaahhh. I went partway up the mountain, and it was CHILLY! I could never do that again. I'm scarred for life just thinking about it." The deep but feminine voice made a loud 'brrrrrrr' sound.
"My dear Artenia, you think that's bad? I was down at the beach yesterday, and a wave came up to my waist. MY WAIST!!! I could have been swept out to sea! No thankyou!" came a grizzled older voice.
"Oh that world be horrible! But oh, did you hear? Demenia is pregnant.", Artenia replied
"Oh... oh my, that will never do... we've already got 10 people in the tribe... oh.... my gosh. We might not be able feed everyone." the elder replied, "I was kicked out of my old tribe when it grew to 10. That's why I founded this village. I guess we'll have to kick someone out." The grizzled old man sighed, "Oh well, who is the most useless? We can get rid of them."

TL:DR - Lifeguard Beach Captain born from the spine of Satan ruins my summer and looses her fancy scholarship and doesn't get to go to university after all
As a teenager I got a part time job as a lifeguard at the biggest pool in the city if not the province. I was a hard worker, and over the years I had every certification I could get. Over the summers I'd often work on nearby beaches. One year these rural beaches had a really hard time keeping staff, so they'd ask people from my pool to work there. It just so happened my parents had a cottage on one of the beaches and I said "Hey, I'd be interested working at Middle-of-Nowhere beach! It'd be peaceful, and I can come home on weekends if I want!"
I took the job, about 4 hours away from home for a 10 week contract. I was a lifeguard instructor trainer, I certify people to teach other people how to train lifeguards. At the time of this story I was one of the youngest to have this certification. Most of my co-workers were going into their second year of working on this beach and frankly second year of being a lifeguard.... It was going to be my first year working in this area. Basically the head manager told me:
"Look, it's your first time working out here, we need some one with your experience. We can't give you Beach Captain position [management] on paper... BUT we are willing to pay you at a beach captain rate plus extra for you certifications. AND you can fill in as beach captain on days when the others can't. As far as we're concerned you're an alternate. We just don't want to upset the locals more than we need to... be advised though you may need to work at a few other beaches out around there" Hmmm more pay, fewer responsibilities? Yeah, I guess I can take this one for the team!
Here's what you need to know about this place. The area is a naturally BEAUTIFUL place, this is one of the best drives on the continent, one of the top 10 islands in the world. Mountains to the left, endless ocean to the right, beaches everywhere. It's also one of the poorest parts of the country, and some communities have a mob mentality when outsiders come to work here... For the most part my co-workers liked me and appreciated my experience, except for the one beach captain we'll call "Maggie".
Everyone employed goes to a training camp retreat. District managers go for 5 days. Beach
