Remember when ISPs got Congress to strike down the FCC's internet privacy rules so they could sell the details of your online activity to advertisers? Now Verizon is asking the FCC to pre-empt state privacy laws to ban the same thing.

So, remember earlier this year when lawmakers who take big bucks from companies like Comcast and Verizon voted to gut the FCC's internet privacy rules that prevented those same companies from collecting and selling our personal information to advertisers?

Now, Verizon (where FCC Chairman Ajit Pai used to be a top lawyer) is lobbying the FCC to preempt state based Internet privacy legislation that would have prevented that same practice. ISPs also got caught red handed spreading misinformation to lawmakers in California about broadband privacy rules as well.

This is just the latest example of Grade A "Cable company f*ckery" happening at the FCC, who are rushing toward a vote to gut net neutrality protections, likely in December.

If you care about Internet freedom and privacy, now's a good time to call your members of Congress and tell them to oppose the FCC's plan to kill net neutrality. You can do that here with one click.

It's 5 AM on my 24th birthday. I'm in my last year of law school, in love with an amazing man, and about to submit my first brief to the United States Supreme Court

I couldn't be happier. In the last year I've wrangled my mental health and I'm in a better place than I've been in years.

In the moment these accomplishments seem insignificant to work and time put in, but they're huge.

What is something going well in your life now?

Edit: I've gone through the comments and tried to respond to everyone. If I missed you I'm sorry! I'll be hanging around and continuing to cheer you guys on, give pep talks, advice and celebrating the great things going on in your lives!

UPDATE:

Many people asked about the brief I was working on. I will not identify the exact brief for privacy purposes but here is the Supreme Court link to the case, Allen v. Cooper. All of the Amicus briefs filed are at the bottom. I wrote one of them ;)

https://www.supremecourt.gov/search.aspx?filename=/docket/docketfiles/html/public/18-877.html

I am happy to answer all questions you have about it, except those that would identify the one I wrote.

What is the constitutionality of so-called "Red Flag" laws in the United States?

After the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, the debate on gun control policy has once again resurfaced in the public purview.

In Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine has pushed for the passage of a so-called "Red Flag" law. These are "state laws that authorize courts to issue a special type of protection order, allowing the police to temporarily confiscate firearms from people who are deemed by a judge to be a danger to themselves or to others." An example of a state with a current Red Flag law is Oregon:

>Oregon’s Red Flag law requires a fairly simple process. The first step is for a concerned family member, household member, or law enforcement officer to ask the court for an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO), which will remove a weapon, or a concealed handgun license, from an individual who is at risk for suicide or is a danger to others. An Order also prevents the person from buying additional guns for a one year period. The law is nicknamed β€œRed Flag Law” for when a person exhibits a β€˜red flag’ or other indicator that they may be a harm to themselves, or others. It is one of the few tools that family and household members have to quickly remove a weapon from somebody who is at risk.

Other states include Florida and Maryland. However, there has been some issues raised regarding these laws.

How do these laws interact with the Constitutional right to bear arms and to avail of due process?

Today is National Voter Registration Day! Since 2012, every year on the fourth Tuesday of September, hundreds of thousands of first-time voters register to vote on this day. It’s an amazing celebration of our democracy -- a time for all Americans to come together and get ready to vote.

Should I, a Muslim and a person of color born in the United States, feel obligated to follow the laws of a society that hates me?

Context: Social contract theory argues that persons’ moral and/or political obligations are dependent upon a contract or agreement among them to form the society in which they live, and civil disobedience is the refusal to comply with certain laws or to pay taxes and fines, as a peaceful form of political protest. So if the government treats me, and countless other minority groups, like a second class citizen, is it not breaching its end of the social contract, and if so, why should I uphold my end? I am not advocating for crimes such as murder or terrorism. I'm just a college student, plagued with neuroticism and confused about how to best navigate this society that I was born into. I would love to have a mature discussion about this without resorting to hurling insults and name-calling, although maybe that's too much to ask when discussing the topic of race on a website like this. Either way, let me know what you think and please be respectful.
