American Presidential First Names (Repost)

(This was originally a post on my old account which I deleted because I grew to dislike my old username.)

Be civil. I understand that politics are emotional and passionate, but this is not about personal opinions on these men, this is just about their first names. As it is, naming your child after a US President is an existing trend and does give them a powerful namesake. Presidents also often popularize the usage of their names. Calvin reached its most popularity peak in 1924 and Grover reached its popularity peak in 1885.

First Names:

(6) James (Madison, Monroe, Polk, Buchanan, Garfield, and Carter) - Hebrew for "Supplanter"

(4) John (Adams, Q. Adams, Tyler, and Kennedy) - Hebrew for "God is gracious"

(4) William (Harrison, McKinley, Taft, and Clinton) - English for "Resolute Protection"

(3) George (Washington, H. W. Bush, and W. Bush) - Greek for "Farmer"

(2) Andrew (Jackson and Johnson) - Greek for "Strong"

(2) Franklin (Pierce and Roosevelt) - English for "Free landholder"

Thomas (Jefferson) - Archaic for "Twin"

Martin (Van Buren) - Latin for "Warlike"

Zachary (Taylor) - Hebrew for "The Lord has Remembered"

Millard (Fillmore) - Latin for "Caretaker of the Mill)

Abraham (Lincoln) - Hebrew for "Father of multitudes"

Ulysses (Grant) - Latin variant of "Odysseus"

Rutherford (Hayes) - English for "Cattle ford"

Chester (Arthur) - Latin for "Fortress"

Grover (Cleveland) - English for "Lives near a grove of trees"

Benjamin (Harrison) - Hebrew for "The son of the right hand"

Theodore (Roosevelt) - Greek for "Gift of God"

Woodrow (Wilson) - English for "Row of houses by a wood"

Warren (Harding) - English from French for "Park keeper"

Calvin (Coolidge) - Latin for "Hairless"

Herbert (Hoover) - German for "Bright Army"

Harry (Truman) - Derivative of Henry. German for "Estate ruler"

Dwight (Eisenhower) - German for "White/Blonde"

Lyndon (Johnson) - English for "Linden Tree Mill"

Richard (Nixon) - German for "Dominant Ruler"

Gerald (Ford) - English for "Ruler with the spear"

Ronald (Reagan) - Norse for "Ruler's Counselor"

Barack (Obama) - Arabic for "Blessing"

Donald (Trump) - Scottish for "Proud Chief"

Joseph (Biden) - Hebrew for "Jehovah increases"

Something to mention

Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, and Calvin Coolidge went by their middle names. They were born as Stephen Grover Cleveland, Thomas Woodrow Wilson, and John Calvin Coolidge.

If you count Coolidge as a John, there are 5 Johns.

If you count Wilson as a Tho

β€œPresidential” boy’s name

I like names that are less common but familiar and easy to spell/remember- for our baby boy my front runner is Beckett nn Beck. Levi and Eli also go really well with our last name (long β€œe” sound, L sounds). I would love to stay out of the top 10 at the least, out of the top 100 if possible (older sisters names are #251 and #562). My husband wants something β€œpresidential.” He wants something like Henry, Charles, or John. He would also like something Biblically linked if possible.

Any ideas on how we can meet in the middle??

Why is it that a significant amount of African-American descendants of slaves have Presidential surnames (Washington, Jackson, Jefferson, etc)? Was it a trend when they got their freedom to adopt the name of a former President?

I assume that all the African-American Washingtons and Jeffersons aren’t descended from Washington and Jefferson’s estates, and at some point they chose those names after gaining their freedom. But why?

Were newly-freed African-Americans big fans of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Johnson, and Jackson? And if they were choosing Presidential surnames intentionally because they liked them, why aren’t there more black Lincolns? Would Johnson have been popular among former-slaves during his presidency? Why name themselves after Jackson, who happily participated in slavery and hardly seems like someone they would see as an ally?

Or was there a potentially subversive element to their decision to embrace Presidential names? Making the last name of notable slave-owning politicians become primarily associated with descendants of slaves seems kind of like it could have been potentially spite-driven and empowering, like claiming the name of your oppressors and making it your own or something?
