With another tournament over, I thought it'd be worth looking into this. Making the championship game has been a tall order for several programs, but a good majority of schools from major conferences have made at least one Final Four. Only 16 major conference schools have yet to make it out of the regional finals, and while some are predictable, others came as a nice surprise, at least to me.
I've ordered this table by the number of tournament appearances the school has made from highest to lowest (with alphabetical order breaking the tie).
Team | Tournament Appearances | Best Finish | Most recent |
---|---|---|---|
Missouri | 28 | Elite 8 (1944, 1976, 1994, 2002, 2009) | Mizzou's last claim to the regional finals took them through Cornell, Marquette, and Memphis, the latter of which became an exciting 102-91 shootout. Sadly, the fun and games ended against UConn, although they fought hard, losing just 82-75. |
Xavier | 28 | Elite 8 (2004, 2008, 2017) | Xavier's run in 2017 is worthy of the mini-Cinderella status. They defeated 6-seed Maryland 76-65, 3-seed Florida State 91-66, 2-seed Arizona 73-71, before falling to Gonzaga in a blowout. |
Tennessee | 23 | Elite 8 (2010) | Despite all the success of the women's program, the Tennessee men's team only has one Elite 8 under their belt despite also being a relatively consistent tournament entrant. That 2010 run saw them notably defeat 2-seed Ohio State before getting completely heartbroken against Michigan State, losing 70-69. |
Alabama | 22 | Elite 8 (2004) | Alabama's deepest run in that 2004 tournament saw them, as an 8-seed, pull off a notable upset against 1-seed Stanford 70-67, then also defeat Syracuse 80-71 before UConn finally ousted them. |
Creighton | 22 | Elite 8 (1941) | They only qualified by making the tournament in the first place, losing to Washington State 48-39. More recently, they finally reached a Sweet 16 in an expanded tournament in 2021, winning a close one against UCSB 63-62 then dumping Ohio 72-58 before Gonzaga rolled them. |
Boston College | 18 | Elite 8 (1967, 1982, 1994) | BC had a bit of a Cinderella story as a 9-seed in 1994, and their run included a major 75-72 upset over 1-seed UNC and another significant win over Indiana before losing out to Florida. |
Arizona State | 16 | Elite 8 (1961, 1963, 1975) | Their last run to the Elite 8 ran through Alabama and UNLV before the misfortune of UCLA popped on the radar. |
Vanderbilt | 15 | Elite 8 (1965) | They were the beneficiary of a much smaller tournament in 1965, only needing |
Sorry, no pics, but hereβs how I have the power five conferences realigned, just know that this is my opinion, and Iβm trying to make the shakeup at least somewhat logistically feasible for the schools.

Big 12:
Is essentially dissolved, buuut you canβt delete conferences, so Β―_(γ)_/Β― Iβd say most (all?) of them would jump to the AAC if they canβt get a P5 invite. To me, itβs still debatable whether or not this will make the AAC a βPower Fiveβ conference. Otherwise, I think if the Big XII can rope in the likes Boise State, then the conference has a chance at staying afloat.
PAC-12 North:
Washington
Washington State
Oregon
Oregon State
Cal
USC
PAC-12 South:
Colorado
Utah
UCLA
Arizona State
Arizona
Oklahoma State

Mainly, the Big 12. Curious what people make of βwhat could be/couldβve beenβ Big 12 scenarios.
Mine are Auburn (fav team), Nebraska, Georgia Tech, Azirona State, and Baylor.

So I've done a list where I separated all the FBS teams by time zone, and did a list where I separated the P5 and G5 teams by time zone. But I did those alphabetically and ended up with 3 conferences.
I decided to do it again, this time separating them by north and south within their time zones, creating five conferences. I didn't bother with the G5 teams, and probably won't if I'm being honest.
I haven't come up with any logos (or better names), but if anyone else wants to I think that would be pretty cool. Let me know what you think about this list, it will more than likely be my last on the subject.
