A list of puns related to "Porter Robinson"
hello (again) everyone! i did an AMA 6 years ago around the release of my last album, Worlds. since then, I worked on "Shelter" with Madeon, and also co-created "Shelter the Animation" shortly after. i also launched a side project a few years ago called Virtual Self (recommended if you're interested in deep dives into electronic music subgenres and turn-of-the-millennium aesthetics).
last friday, i released my second album, "Nurture", which is a project that took me about 6 years on-and-off. after "Worlds", i felt this really strong need to write an album that explored the beauty of reality and of the everyday, but as i'm sure we'll get into here, it was one of the hardest (and most worthwhile!) things i've ever done.
here's the new album "nurture" ! https://porterrobinson.com/nurture

i'm also really interested in speaking about creativity more broadly, since it's something i've thought about a lot over the last few years.

With the release of his new album nurture and announcement of the return of his festival Second Sky, I was reminded of some drama that would make a good post for this subreddit. Some citations and sources have been lost to time and am going to try and limit some to prevent any possible harassment [Goes without saying, but DON'T troll people involved]. Also, this is all written in a perspective before his new album, so keep that in mind.
Porter Robinson 101:
Porter Robinson is a big time electronic producer and DJ whose main work if I had to uncharitably summarize would be described as "feelsy anime dance music." The guy actually has quite the interesting backstory worthy of a post of its own, but for the sake of this story I'm just gonna hit some highlights to help explain why he has such a big fanbase.
Porter is basically the poster child for a small town nerdy kid gone world famous Musician. Raised by anime, DDR, and the internet, he was making electronic music since he was a teenager and hit it big as a DJ by the time he was 17. Though he originally made waves for his jockey persona and electro house Spitfire EP, he found that wasn't really him and went to his nerdier roots and released his debut album Worlds in 2014.
Needless to say, it became a hit. In fact, I would go as far as to say it's a BELOVED album among fans and basically seen as one of the holy grails of rave culture. While ultimately an Electronic album, it takes a lot of influence from indie, pop, and especially J-pop and Vocaloid, giving it a very anime-esque emotional and ethereal vibe that made it quite a stand out from other mainstream EDM at the time. His Worlds Live concert is basically considered a must see for any raver, and it's considered such an experience that its NOTORIOUS for making people bawl into tears. In 2016, he released arguably his biggest hit to date with the single Shelter alongside Madeon, another DJ/Producer who shares a crazy backstory with him and has a lot of fan overlap, basically the Ken to his Ryu. Add in a literal tear jerking AMV made by the studio behind Sword Art Online and this man basically cemented himself as a God amongst the rave and EDM community and a headliner for festivals to come.
Porter's also pretty unique in the community for his personality. W

With his new album recently released and a full tour schedule through the end of 2021, I feel it is a possibility he could snag a spot at Coachella. Golden Voice is also the primary partner who puts on his festival: Second Sky. Not to mention he and Madeon played sunset on main stage a few years back. I guess weβll see!
Madeonβs Good Faith Live set could easily be a contender as well. Heβs playing that at festivals all over the place starting this year! He did debut it at Lollapalooza in 2019 after all.
OK not sure if this technically counts as a synth recipe but was just wondering how Porter is able to create complex melodies and chords with seemingly sampled vocals (yet sound so good and organic) on Nurture. Specifically 2:51 in Mirror and 3:12 in Sweet Time, thanks guys!

Hey guys in this short video I cover some cool techniques you can use to achieve a Porter inspired lead. I do use a custom wavetable for this one but itβs not necessary at all, the main takeaways are using noise routed through a key tracked filter with a high resonance to create a βpocketβ of noise around whichever note is playing.
I also cover how you can place a compressor after your reverb in the chain to glue to sound and reverb together for a cool effect, as well as a neat stereo widening effect with Serumβs ping pong delay.
Let me know what you think! :)
The opening track San plays in the live set I linked is an example of the sound Iβm looking for.

I couldn't wait to listen it.
Edit: If you can afford to buy the album, do it. It worths every penny :)
