On the question of "Patriotic Socialism" (A reply to Infrared)

Edit: part 2 here.

I left a comment on r/GenZedong regarding the question of "Patriotic Socialism", in particular, the decision by the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) to exclude those that choose to parrot this particular talking point. Discussing the decision of the CPUSA is not worth conversation. But talking about the wider question of how Patriotism fits into the Socialist movement as a whole is. I am an Australian Communist, and consider myself to be something of a "Left-Nationalist".

First, a breakdown of the basic theory of "Patriotic Socialism":

In their video, "Socialist Patriotism: America vs. America", the webcast Infrared makes the following points:

  • The tendency of some socialists to call for the destruction of America as a whole - the "Burn it all down" approach - is a non-Marxist one, and, in fact, serves the position of alienating the working class from Communism.
  • The reason for this is that working class people are deeply patriotic and by denouncing something they hold dear they are in effect denouncing the working class.
  • Patriotism has been apart of Socialist nations and movements since their inception - in particular, they cite the Warsaw pact and Lenin's "Revolutionary Defeatism" in the first world war to rally the working class to revolution.
  • The United States of America began as a bold and just project as one of the first democracies in the world, and, carrying the legacy of the working class that built the USA, has deep and longstanding democratic and revolutionary proletarian national traditions that must be protected and encouraged.
  • To denounce the US, therefore, and call for its destruction, is not only detrimental to the Communist movement in America, but it serves the forces of reaction and anti-communism as a liberal stance.

These positions somehow reach the conclusion that to be patriotic in the USA is to be revolutionary. This seems like a contradiction at face value, ^((because it is),) seeing as the USA is a bourgeois country, perhaps the most bourgeois and imperialist nation on earth. It oppresses the most people, it holds the most nations hostage, it brutalises and slaughters the most people. The individual points by themselves are not completely unsound, though the conclusion flies directly in the face of the historical and current material realities faced by the United States.

The main problem with this take is

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Shambhala Board letter to leaders regarding Shambhala Tulsa

>Dear Shambhala Leader,
The Shambhala Board would like to acknowledge that leaders from the Tulsa Center have recently posted some correspondence between them and the Shambhala Board regarding a request they have made.
>
>The Tulsa leaders are seeking a response regarding a change in ownership status of their building. The Board understands they would like the matter resolved and that it has been difficult to be kept waiting. However, with the mediation still underway, their request cannot be addressed until after it is concluded and the Board’s scope of responsibility is determined. The Board’s recent correspondence with the Tulsa leaders, via Shambhala’s attorney, asked for patience, expressed interest in discussing the matter further, and provided some general legal context about the situation. It was not an expression of a decision but a description of the current legal status as a jumping off point for discussion. The letter was a pretext for a scheduled meeting which the Tulsa leadership canceled. The Board continues to reach out to Tulsa’s leadership and would very much like to meet with them.
>
>The Board is also very cognizant that the issues Tulsa is raising may be important for many of our local centers. We would like to be able to address these issues fully and not piecemeal, as they get to the heart of what we all might want Shambhala to be as a global organization.
>
>With that in mind, the Board and Shambhala Global Services (SGS) have been working on a process that will let us all address our organizations’ interrelationships on a global basis. One way we want to proceed is to work collaboratively with leaders on an affiliate agreement which we anticipate will replace the previous charters. SGS plans to send out a detailed overview of the areas under consideration in the affiliate agreement so leaders can review and provide feedback on what affiliation in Shambhala means – what our mutual obligations are and the benefits of that – including this area of asset management.
>
>The Board will continue to reach out to the Tulsa leaders and, as difficult as we know it is, we need to ask for continued patience until the Shambhala Board’s governing powers are clarified in early 2022.
>
>With best wishes for the holiday time,
>

Red and Black Unite: The Paris Commune and Socialist Democracy

>Crowned heads, wealth and privilege may well tremble should ever again the Black and Red unite!
-Otto von Bismarck (1872, reflecting on the split in the First International)

What is socialist democracy? And can Marxists and anarchists unite in building new political forms that enable true proletarian self-government?

Revisiting Marx’s classic piece on the Paris Commune, β€œThe Civil War in France,” with our DSA Marxist Reading Group reminded me of his liberatory vision of the new form of proletarian power. Although Marx and Engels name it the β€œDictatorship of the Proletariat,” their description of it is actually very similar to the explanation of anarchist communism outlined by Peter Kropotkin in his classic book The Conquest of Bread.

Is it possible to reconcile the two visions? This is not a new argument, but I think that the Commune lays out the basic political form of what libertarian socialism looks like in practiceβ€”one that anarchists and Marxist alike could support.

First, a clarification of terms. When I teach about Marxism, one of the first things I stress to my students is that Marxists define the word dictatorship very differently than others do. It does not mean the authoritarian rule of one person. Rather, dictatorship simply means which class has power in society. Thus, capitalism is a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie because the capitalist class holds power. A dictatorship of the proletariat would mean that the working class holds power instead. But these two classes cannot hold the same orientation towards the state. Proletarian power must look different than bourgeois power. Why?

The state, as Marxists define it, is a structure of class rule. Anarchists, on the other hand, argue that the state to a certain degree stands outside of society and has its own interests. In either case, the state is alienated power par excellence. It is necessarily a small group of people holding power and ruling over society. This works very well for the bourgeoisie, as they are a small group of people seeking to hold power. But it does not work for the proletariat.

How can the proletariat, the vast majority of society, exercise power through the state when it is necessarily a small group of people making decisions for majority? We have seen that neither representative democracy nor the Sovie
