If the saints *cannot* fall away, then why do the apostles make so many warnings to Christians against turning from the faith?
And if God accomplishes perseverance through those warnings, then doesn't that open the possibility that a Christan *could* fall away even if no Christian ever falls away in actuality?
That seems to be extrinsic grace relying on the free decisions of the Christian under particular circumstances (such as the existence of apostolic warnings) arranged by God according to his foreknowledge and knowledge of what could have happened. That's not exactly "irresistible grace" that the person cannot initially reject or turn from.
But if grace cannot be rejected, and if true Christians at least don't have the possibility of falling away (even if they never do), then why all the apostolic warnings?
Some Examples of Apostolic Warnings (ESV):
James 5:19β20 (ESV): 19Β My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20Β let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
Romans 11:21 (ESV): Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but Godβs kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.
1 Corinthians 9:27 (ESV): 27Β But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
Galatians 5:4 (ESV): 4Β You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.
