Happened to see on Helmet's website that Page was offering lessons-- $60 for a half hour or $100 for an hour, which is pretty much the going rate for a lesson from the random yahoo at guitar center in my area.
I recently got a bit more serious about guitar after just owning a guitar for the last 20 years or so mostly collecting dust (thanks COVID). From reading this forum I knew I needed lessons to get more focus and real-time feedback, but decided to pull the trigger on this because, hey if we just spent the entire hour bullshitting, I'd still be ecstatic.
I booked the lesson, which was then confirmed by his assistant via text and email. The day before, I received a reminder text and email and then the day off, payment information and details for joining the skype session. Great communication.
Page is a gracious, humble, and extremely personable guy. It's clear he's doing this less so for the (relatively small) income and more because he really enjoys teaching and interacting with students/fans. I felt a good rapport within a few minutes and we did spend about 30 minutes just talking, about music, life, whatever. that in itself was worth the price of admission for me.
Then came the actual lesson. Part of the initial conversation was me talking about where my guitar proficiency is. He was really good about not assuming I knew everything, but without being condescending about it (which was one reason I quit lessons as a teenager and never took one again until yesterday), and as we talked and he observed me, he got a good sense of what i conceptually understood and didn't and changed his level of explanation accordingly. We ended up going about 15min over the scheduled time and he followed up an email with notes he took and some suggested exercises, concepts to read through, and other material (about 7 pages worth).
Afterwards, I got another text from his assistant asking for feedback and confirming receipt of the email from Page. Just a really nice personal touch. I definitely plan on another lesson in a few weeks after mastering the stuff we covered yesterday.
For context I was a manager at the Upper James and was managing the newly custom built Main St W location (which is now used by a condo company to advertise) and left in 2002 after putting up with too much crap and trying in vain to warn them about their multitude of problems. Imagine my surprise to see all their locations shut down when I visited Hamilton for a Halloween event and seeing notices of construction/holding companies posted on the windows and tales of them just being closed for renovations. A few discrete inquiries here and there and contacting the local paper, a few weeks later the front page news exposing what really happened hits the stands. In short, corporate seized franchise owner Ron Goswell's locations and assets (about $10 million dollars worth), reasons cited included my own concerns that I tried to warn about, but instead I was the squeaky wheel that got greased.
Anyone have their own tales to share? I've personally experienced and witnessed more than my share, and some have come forward to reveal stuff that made my blood boil.
Anyway, here's the article, enjoy.
What's the Beef
Burger King seized its five Hamilton-area restaurants in August. Legal documents show a Whopper of a battle between the chain and longtime franchisee Ron Goswell.
Steve Arnold The Hamilton Spectator (Nov 27, 2007)
The grills are cold and the deep fryers are empty at Burger King restaurants in Hamilton's west end and on the Mountain, the result of a bitter dispute between the chain and a former franchise holder.
In August, nine restaurants worth almost $10 million, including four in Hamilton and one in Burlington, were seized by the company after the franchisee fell behind in rent, royalty and other payments.
Two here have since reopened.
For Ron Goswell, the Sudbury-based franchisee, the action ended a 28-year association with the Home of the Whopper and left him nearly ruined at a time he'd hoped to be thinking about retirement.
In court documents filed in an aborted effort to get an injunction against the seizure of the stores, Goswell pleaded he only fell behind in those payments because he took on more than $1.4 million in renovation projects at the stores -- work he alleged was encouraged by Burger King executives.
While he lost everything, Burger King "will receive a significant windfall of newly renovated stores ... paid for by the plaintiff."
In its own legal documents, Burger King alleged Goswell had failed to meet the company's standar
