Staff corner

I left the biggest name of the series for last, original creater and mangaka Tezuka, Osamu. The MAL blurb is pretty decent:

Tezuka was a Japanese manga artist, cartoonist, animator, and film producer. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga," "the godfather of manga" and "the god of manga." Additionally, he is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during Tezuka's formative years.

Tezuka began what was known as the manga revolution in Japan with his New Treasure Island published in 1947. His legendary output would spawn some of the most influential, successful, and well-received manga series including Tetsuwan Atom, Jungle Taitei, Black Jack, and Hi no Tori, all of which won several awards.

To add to that, Tezuka founded Mushi Productions in 1961, which went on to produce Astro Boy, the first modern TV anime. And modern here mainly means cheap. Because Tezuka’s main contribution to anime was making it cheap enough to produce in abundance. This included perfecting all the budget-saving methods that can be used in animation. Hayao Miyazaki is another famous director who has criticized Tezuka for this. However you feel about that, I think it fair to say that Tezuka’s influence on anime is still outsized to this day, 3 decades after his death.

Questions

  1. I never heard Black Jack being talked about before researching for the OVA rewatches. Do you think the show holds up, or is it rightfully forgotten?
  2. How does this compare to other Dezaki shows or to Monster?
  3. Favorite episode? Favorite character?

#Rewatch: 1990s OVAs – Black Jack (24h reminder)

Interest thread | Announcement

The sixth edition of the 1990s OVA rewatch features Black Jack, the underground doctor. An OVA with 12 episodes, directed by none other than Osamu Dezaki who adopted the manga by Osamu Tezuka.

##Black Jack (1993)

MAL | ANN1 ANN2 | AniDB1 AniDB2 | Anilist1 Anilist2

Note that ANN, AniDB, and Anilist split up the OVA into two parts, the Black Jack (OVA), 10 episodes, and Black Jack Final (OVA), 2 episodes. MAL combines both into Black Jack (OVA), 12 episodes. We will watch all 12 episodes.

Synopsis: Kuroo Hazama, also known as "Black Jack," is a legend in the medical world. Famous for being one of the best, as well as not having a license, Hazama and his assistant Pinoko save countless lives that other doctors cannot... for a price; an exorbitant price, in fact, which causes many to view the genius as greedy and heartless. Despite these claims, however, none can deny his skill and the lengths that he will go to treat his patients. This dark medical drama tells the story of the ominous and mysterious world of underground medicine as Black Jack risks his life to cure some of the most bizarre diseases imaginable, even if it means breaking every law in the process.

##Schedule

The rewatch will run from 1st of December until 13th of December.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month With These Anime!

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month and here in Helsinki, we have Pride Week in the final week of June. Regardless of where you live, Pride Month is a time for increased visibility of LGBTQ+ people and with that intent in mind, I came up with this Compilation Watch This Thread for anime featuring characters that fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, organized by letters in LGBTQ.

Beware of spoilers beyond this point. These spoilers will reveal the queer identity of characters in various anime.

#Anime With Lesbians

##Yuri Kuma Arashi (Yuri Bear Storm)

Content Warning

Yurikuma Arashi is a direct critique of the idea that Girls' Love is pure and free of any sexual desire. The idea that lesbian love is a form of fleeting adolescent intimacy between girls allows people (often straight males) to indulge in a voyeuristic fantasy by stripping would-be lesbians of their sexuality and treating their intimacy as a platonic relationship that's merely service for onlookers. Yurikuma Arashi is a critique of how queer people are often commodified and their personal identities are drastically altered for the sake of conformity. The lesbians in Yurikuma Arashi express desire for the same sex (NSFW LINK) and this causes them to be excluded from the rest of society. Yurikuma Arashi is about stereotypes associated with lesbians and the pressure on them to conform to those stereotypes and how acceptance can break down oppressive hierarchies within a society that makes victims out of queer people.

Yurikuma Arashi can be streamed on Funimation.

##Yagate Kimi ni Naru (Bloom Into You)

Bloom Into You is a recent anime and it's quickly asserted its position as one of the most influential works in the LGBTQ+ community. Yuu Koito, the protagonist of the anime is in love with the idea of love yet when a guy confesses to her, she realizes she's incapable of experiencing it herself. This changes when she meets Touko Nanami as both struggle to come to terms with their feelings for each other. Bloom Into You highlights how confusing your first relationship can be especially when you haven't quite figured yourself out yet.

Bloom Into You can be streamed on HIDIVE.

Healin’ Good Precure Vol. 11, and 13 to 15

This completes my collection HGPC DVDs. There are five volumes that I don’t have. But I probably won’t get them, because the episodes they contain don’t interest me.

Suite Precure the Movie: Take it back! The Miraculous Melody that Connects Hearts

Maho Girls Pretty Cure! The Movie: Wonderous! Cure Mofurun!

Apparently there’s some rights issues with the Cure Mofurun character. So Toei can’t use her in any other productions.

Pretty Cure Miracle Leap: A Strange Day with Everyone

The interesting thing about the Miracle Leap movie, is that the home release differs from the theatrical release. Because of COVID, the theatrical release modified or removed any scenes that encouraged the audience participation (e.g. waving their Miracle Lights, dancing along to the end credits song). I actually wished the theatrical version was on the DVD too, as the home release adds an annoying on screen prompt for every scene where the Miracle Lights are present.

Healin' Good Pretty Cure The Movie: GoGo! Big Transformation! at The Town of Dreams

I liked this film better than Miracle Leap. However, I do have a few issues with it. For example, the inclusion of the Yes Precure 5 team feels like they were shoehorned in a the last minute. I suspect they were added in only because of their ranking on the last Precure poll in Japan. They’re roles in the film are not significant enough to matter, and they could easily be taken out without affecting the narrative. Interestingly enough, the blu-ray I ordered came with a bonus drama CD which is supposed to tell the YP5 side of the story that wasn’t elaborated in the film. Unfortunately, I don’t know a lick of Japanese, so I’ll have the wait until someone translates it.

Beet The Vandel Buster: The Sacrifice (DVD)

I enjoyed the manga, so I thought I’d check out the anime. This is only volume they released in English though.

Black Butler: Book of Atlantic (DVD)

There’s parts of this film that feel like they were ripped from the Titanic film.

Black Jack Final (DVD)

This contains the final two OVA episodes (11 & 12), that have not been released in English. Apparently the original d

This episode is the second in the series to feature a character named Taneda. And for the second time, that character is voiced by Mugihito. I already featured him in episode 6.

It is also the second time we see Inspector Takasugi. He is voiced by Hazama, Michio. He mostly worked in dubbing foreign movies (being the Japanese voice of Dean Martin, Roy Schneider, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, and Al Pacino in several movies each), but also has several anime credits. The most notable ones are probably Walter von Schenkopp from LotGH and Bruno Global from Macross.

The character designer of the series is Sugino, Akio. He worked together with director Dezaki on several other shows, including Ashita no Joe (the postcard memories of BJ’s face remind of of Joe every time …), Ace o Nerae, Astro Boy 2, and Onisama e… The two both first worked together while being animators for Astro Boy 1, the anime with which mangaka Osamu Tezuka (the guy who also drew the Black Jack manga) famously started the era of modern TV anime.

Questions

  1. Does Mariko remind anybody else of the homeless arc in Hinamatsuri?
  2. Could Black Jack succeed in treating a patient with (just) a mental illness?
  3. 1 more episode left of the original OVA and 2 more of Black Jack Finale. Any predictions for the ending (of either the original 10 episodes, or the additional 2)?

Today’s patient, Michelle Rochasse, is voiced by Doi, Mika. She had one of her biggest roles right at the start of her career, as Misa Hayase from Macross. In several big series she played minor roles, such as Queen Serenity in Sailor Moon, Naoko Akagi in NGE, Koby in One Piece, and Megumi Takani in Rurouni Kenshin. In Mushishi, she voices both Ginko’s teacher and the narrator (outside of Monster, I’d say that Mushishi is the closest series I have seen that I would compare Black Jack to).

The director, storyboarded, and script writer of Black Jack is Dezaki, Osamu. His influence on the show is abundantly clear in the visual design, using his trademark postcard memories, and in the storytelling. He started out as an animator and assistant director, working on Astro Boy in the studio of Osamu, Tezuka (AFAIK no relation), the father of modern anime. Incidentally, Tezuka is also the mangaka of Black Jack. Dezaki first directed and became famous with Ashita no Joe. Other shows he worked on are Ace o Nerae, Rose of Versailles, Space Cobra, Onisama e…, Tomorrow’s Joe, and Clannad.

Questions

  1. Did you assume that Michelle’s problem was mental?
  2. What is your opinion about Kiriko? What is his history with BJ?

MAL | ANN1 ANN2 | AniDB1 AniDB2 | Anilist1 Anilist2

Note that ANN, AniDB, and Anilist split up the OVA into two parts, the Black Jack (OVA), 10 episodes, and Black Jack Final (OVA), 2 episodes. MAL combines both into Black Jack (OVA), 12 episodes. We watch all 12 episodes.
