A list of puns related to "Omar Torrijos"
In case you might not be aware of, I am referring to the Panamanian dictator who came in power during the aftermath of the 1968 coup d'etat, until he was deposed by the Panamanian military in 1981.
Some confer that he was a ruthless autocrat, while his supporters pinpoint his policies on decreasing economic inequality as a "success story".
Which one of the above accounts aligns closer with reality? Or should the actual "perception" of his presidency be much more nuanced?
Hi Panamanians!
I read about Omar Torrijos in Confessions of an Economic Hitman by John Perkins. He describes Torrijos as a brave leader for standing up to powerful corporate interests. He seemed like a good decent man that cared for his people especially the poor and middle class.
Do the Panamanians that still remember him share the same opinion?
Thank you!
I've been doing some Wikipedia digging, which I know can be controversial among some socialists, but I see it as a good jumping off point for further research, at least on this subject.
As a bonus question, is there evidence of US involvement in the 2017 Zimbabwe coup?
There have existed various "Communist/Socialist" Military Dictatorships across history, with the military serving the role of the respective nation's "Vanguard Party".
Examples include the "Derg" of Ethiopia, Somalia under Mohamed Siad Barre, Burkina Faso under Thomas Sankara, Ghana under Jerry Rawlings, Benin under Mathieu Kerekou, Egypt under Gamal Abdel Nasser, Algeria under Houari Boumediene, Sudan under Jafaar Nimeiry, Syria under Salah Jadid and Hafez Al Assad, Libya under Muammar Gaddafi, Iraq under Ahmed Hassan al Bakr, North Yemen under Abdullah al Sallal, Argentina under Juan Peron, Bolivia under Alfredo Ovando Candia and Juan Josse Torres, the "Socialist Republic Of Chile" in Chile, Peru under Juan Velasco Alvarado, Nicaragua under Daniel Ortega, Panama under Omar Torrijos, Suriname under Desi Bouterse, Grenada under Maurice Bishop, Afghanistan under Abdul Qadir, Myanmar under Ne Win, Mongolia under Khorloogiin Choibalsan, Poland under Wojciech Jaruzelski and the "National Salvation Junta" of Portugal.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes
r/unclejokes for dirty jokes
r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC
r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes
Punchline !
Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub
Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat
Do your worst!
How the hell am I suppose to know when itβs raining in Sweden?
Ants donβt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.
They were cooked in Greece.
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
Since the Cutting Room Floor update, one of the most interesting (and memed) characters out of the update is the canon unifier of the far east. The eponymous, utterly greedy, Coca-cola supporting mercenary from Philadelphia. Mitchell WerBell III, the mercenary lord of Magadan and the canonical (look it up, I swear I am not mad!) unifier of Russia's far east.
Besides being easily the most Red Floody ending of Russia, its also marked with being an astoundingly fun nation during the late 60s-early 70s oil crisis and other conflicts of the era due to a special ability allowing him to send volunteers to all battlegrounds during the cold war. Resulting in countless Metal gear solid memes, and also a reminder that TNO has some rather...odd characters in some routes you can take the nations on. (Cough, Hyperborea, Cough)
Yet, this time I decided to do an expose on the man IRL, and, I have to admit in comparison to other weirdo's I had worked with (Wait in line Bonesteel...), Werbell's history is quite well known and really has a Metal Gear Solid-esk charm. But before anything, some quick stuff of his family.
Born to Czarist exiles, and quickly trained in military subterfuge in an era which such an idea was new to the growing cold war major powers, Werbell worked for the OSS during the leadup to world war 2 as a guerrilla operative in china and southeast Asia. Eventually, being a major operative in the region, leading to his lifetime of cold war tutorship of smaller nations under the American sphere. A job, for which he was payed in opium, by the kilos as his form of payment
Post war, he settled down for a time, before fast becoming the nightmare of communists by supporting and training soldiers of both Rafael Trujilo and Fulgencio Batista. The failures of note, as well as cases where he didn't join where cases like supporting a Libertarian inactive to free the Abaco islands, choosing (or just being told not too) to not support a coup d'Γ©tat against Omar Torrijos of Panama, and outright failing to work with a CBS subsidized coup attempt against "Papa Doc" Francois Duvalier.
Yet besides that, he has surreal stories in his career as well as a bit of a playboy: Claiming that Coca-cola hired him for a million dollars to deal with kidnapping threats in Argentina, being a lieutenant general in the Royal Free Afghan Army, being given a Billet to sell his suppressors across Vietnam during the war, and plotting a coup in Guatemala that backfired stupendously alike

Two muffins are in an oven, one muffin looks at the other and says "is it just me, or is it hot in here?"
Then the other muffin says "AHH, TALKING MUFFIN!!!"
Now that I listen to albums, I hardly ever leave the house.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
As far as I am concerned, the United States primarily focused it's "activities" and "influence peddling" towards Latin America and Western Europe, whereas the Soviet Union(alongside China)took a leading role on African and Assian internal affairs.
As we all know however, Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama(under the auspices of Omar Torrijos), Grenada(starting with 1979 until 1983)and Suriname(during the military dictatorship of Desi Bouterse)sided with the Soviet Union, while the rest of Latin America was dealing with the "aftermath" of Operation Condor.
Was there a comprehensive Soviet "strategy" to counter America's influence in the region, or did the Soviet Union withdraw completely so as to focus on other "endeavours" instead?
It really does, I swear!

Edit: Thank you guys for the awards, they're much nicer than the cardboard sleeve I've been using and reassures me that my jokes aren't stale
Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
