A list of puns related to "Northern Occitan"
A couple months ago I went to Perpignan and Carcassonne to do tourism. I liked both cities! You have very beautiful landscapes!
During that days I didn't hear anyone talk occitan and just a few gypsies in Perpignan talk catalan, everyone was speaking french. That's why I would like to ask yiu the next questions:
Do you still know and speak these lenguages? Do you only speak them at homr or also in public? More or less ehat percentage of the population know the lenguage?
In case you are from another country or province with a second lenguage, what about your lenguage?
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
I often see the legacy of the many Crusaders and lords in the Holyland to be portrayed in modern media as very French (Γ la langue d'oΓ―l), but from my understanding most notable French crusaders were Occitan or came from the spoken area of langue d'oc. Wouldn't it mean that Hugues de Lusignan, who arrived to marry into the role of king, spoke a langue d'oc as his mother tongue since he was from Poitou? Does that mean that the chief communication among the lords and cultural heritage was Occitan rather than from Northern France?
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
The word "Warden" comes into Modern English through two routes, both through Proto-Germanic.
The Proto-Germanic ancestor word was "*ward" (* means "reconstructed pronunciation"), meaning "protection". There was also "*warduz" ("keeper, protector") and "*wardΔnΔ " ("to protect"). This is the same root as "wary", "aware", and "beware".
The first route into English was from Proto-Germanic -> Old English -> Middle/Modern English. The OE word was "weard" ("watchman", rhymes mostly with "bared"). This evolved into "ward", an archaic word for "warden", and also "one who is guarded" (you hear a lot of old stories about a man raising his wards).
The second route into English came via Old French. Except it's not through Latin like most of our French vocabulary is. Nor is from Frankish, an extinct Germanic language closely related to Dutch,** which was the language of the original French tribes.
No, French got the word from the Vikings. See, in the 900s, the Kingdom of Normandy was settled by Viking tribes, led by the eventual "Count Rollo" (HrΓ³lfr Ragnvaldsson). It was the Land of the Northmen "Nord-man-ia". The Frankish king gave the land to Rollo to stop him from destroying Paris. And he and his people happily settled down and started speaking Old French, but with a heavy dialect of their original Old Norse. Norman French was very much a distinct dialect, even at the time.
Well, Rollo's descendant, a guy named William the Bastard, eventually managed to conquer England in 1066, becoming "William the Conqueror". (Note: this Viking-descendant defeated English king Harold, about a week after Harold defeated the Viking Herald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge, which is a whole other story). And with that, his settlers brought Norman French into England, where it proceeded to absolutely wreck the English language.
So that's where we got "Warden". A word that means "a person who guards", whether they guard people, or guard the Law itself (hence, Game Warden, or even Prison Warden). Thus giving both a positive and negative connotation to the Wardens of East and West. One sense in which said warden acts as a jailer, keeping the subjects in line, and another in which said warden acts as a protector.
But the story isn't quite over. Because "warden" came into English a third time, three centuries later. Only by then it had changed pronunciations. The speakers of Parisian French, not being Recently Vikings, were not comfortable with words that started

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
When I got home, they were still there.
