Forgotten Words and Neologism

Hello Word Nerds,

Here it is, the final lesson in the book! I've had a lot of fun doing this every week and enjoyed the challenge of trying to learn and use words that I have never come across before - this was a fruitful endeavor for my meager lexicon. Thank you all for your love and support, I don't mean to be mawkish but I didn't just expand my vocabulary but I learned a bit about myself along the way too. I feel more comfortable putting myself out there amongst people who know better than myself even if I miss the mark, it's ok because I'm learning and failure is a part of becoming a better writer and a better person all around. Thank you for always being kind, although I'm not afraid of negative comments I know others are and subsequently refrain from putting themselves out there so really, thank you for being class acts; I hope this encourages other people to be kind to new comers and forgiving of mistakes from new and existing members of this community. Just so you all know, I was playing with perception in some of my examples so if I was being weird or verbose it's because I was in character and getting a little too carried away. Almost all of these words were new for me as well so maybe I didn't quiet grasp their meaning either, or see the variations in usage but now that I'm aware they exist I'm hearing them everywhere and used in ways I didn't think were plausible. Does that happen to anyone else? You learn a new word that you've never heard of, or seen and then all of a sudden it's everywhere? Is there a word for this phenomenon or is it all in my head? Anyway here are the last of the new words I learned, interesting etymologies, and useful information from this lesson. As always this audiobook is called Building a Better Vocabulary by Professor Kevin Flanigan and can be found on the Audible app. I'll see you all around town. Enjoy, happy Sunday!

Edit: I realized that I spelled neologisms wrong in the title despite proof reading multiple times. I guess I should’ve read it over about five more times before posting. New habit - proof read twenty times instead of ten before proceeding. Sorry guys!

Sockdolager (noun)

1. A strong decisive finale blow; a finisher

2. Something or someone outstanding or exceptional.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, sockdolager is possibly a waggish concoction of the words sock (a blow with a fist), and doxology (psalm of praise to God) with the idea being that you’d β€œsock” someo

[TOMT][NEOLOGISM] Word that indicate corporations using social issues to sell their brand

I remember hearing a term which was perfect. You know, like Nike and Adidas saying no to racism with slogans and t-shirts while exploting kids in bangladesh to manufacture shoes.

Or countless other companies using feminism and LGBTQ+ rights to advance their brand without actually giving a fuck.

ITAW for a spoonerism of one word?

I know a spoonerism is mixing up the sounds between two words, but is there a word to describe β€œspoonerizing” the beginning and end of a two syllable word, for example?

I’m wondering if there’s a specific word, or if it would just be considered misspeaking?

Hello! I'm a new Ling student so bear with me. I'm sorry if this has been asked... but what word is used to explain the invention of new words? I know there's "neologism", but that seems to include both new words AND existing words that have new meanings. How can I differentiate?

I'm trying to explain both the invention of new words (like "yeet" for example) compared to a word that has a new meaning or context (like "drip"...) does that make sense? I also discovered the words "conversion", which can imply a change of meaning, but there's also "protologism" which doesn't quite fit my need, as that is more of a word that's created but not widely acknowledged. wikipedia also mentions "prelogism" but... there's no definition for it. haha I even discovered nonce words, but that doesn't quite fit either.....

LPT: recently, some automated customer service phone lines won’t let you speak to a person and insist you talk to the machine like a person instead. If you say nonsense words like β€œmeep morp blerf norb” over and over it registers as you needing to talk to a person, and transfers you.

I was in an infinite loop on a certain Bezos related help line, asking to speak to a representative numerous times and having the automation insist I ask it my questions as If it was a person, which I did, and it was unhelpful- the only way I figured out how to get a person on the line was to make robot noises with my mouth.

voices are changing from mumbles and nonsense words to full on sentences and it’s getting hard to cope with

typically i have a constant chatter going on in the sides of my brain and the occasional where i can actually hear them out loud but recently they’ve been speaking to me like telling me to do things, telling me im horrible person, etc. it’s always my own voice too which is really bothering me since the chatter is different. i can’t concentrate on anything because they keep telling me i’m not doing it good enough. this along with my visual hallucinations have been making me really paranoid and honestly just annoyed. this was kinda just a vent but anyone relate/ have tips?

16th March, 2021 - spoonerism - a transposition of usually initial sounds of two or more words (as in tons of soil for sons of toil)

noun

  1. a transposition of usually initial sounds of two or more words (as in tons of soil for sons of toil)

Popularity: Bottom 10% of words

History

Poor William Archibald Spooner! That British clergyman and educator, who lived from 1844 to 1930, often had to speak in public, but he was a nervous man and his tongue frequently got tangled up. He would say things like "a blushing crow" when he meant "a crushing blow." Spooner's letter reversals became the stuff of legend-and undoubtedly gave his listeners many a laugh. By 1900 his name had inspired the term spoonerism, which lives on to this day.

I need 'scientific' names for some whimsical measuring instruments:

One that measures the amount of humour in a joke

One that determines the moral quality of a situation

One that works out how logical a statement is

One that derives a philosophical principle from a set of circumstances (the way an oscilloscope renders physics to maths)

All answers gratefully accepted, no matter how silly!

The inherent fragility of the word "neologism"

You know, I'm just gonna say it. I kind of resent the word "neologism".

It doesn't suppose your word will ever be common. It is to forever trap your feeble portmanteau in a hellish hole of rarities and coffee-table books, it is to point with shivering fingers, and say, be gentle. It is Neo.

To be a wordsmith is to wave toward a swathing industry, and say: I smote it.

Look upon my word, ye Mighty, and despair!
