Sufjan Stevens is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Detroit, Michigan. Regarded as one of the most acclaimed and well known musicians in the indie folk scene, Stevens is not one to remain caged in one genre, drawing influence from various other genres to develop his signature folk sound, from electronica, to classical, to indie rock, to⦠Christmas music? You get the point. Stevens is a creative tour de force who has managed to make each of his musical endeavours sound unique and different from each other. With this experimentation, he has made many a masterpiece, such as the exuberant and breathtaking Illinois, the glitchy and electronic Age of Adz, and the lo-fi and sorrowful Carrie & Lowell. Each of these albums have become beloved and popular in the indie scene, and have established Stevens as a prominent figure amongst fans of indie music, and here, in r/indieheads.
Joining him on this album is Bryce Dessner, a guitarist from American indie rock band The National, also known as a composer of chamber and orchestra. Dessner has worked with some of the most respected musicians on the planet, including but not limited to Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Jonny Greenwood, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Another collaborator on this album is Nico Muhly, who brought together all these fantastic musicians. Like Dessner, Muhly is an excellent composer, and has written arrangements for bands and musicians like BjΓΆrk, Grizzly Bear, Antony and the Johnsons, and Joanna Newsom. The final member of our quartet is James McAlister, a skilled drummer who has collaborated with Sufjan Stevens in the past, most notably on Illinois.
