Inspired by u/ PopeDarthPaul's post, I decided a year ago to start reviewing the many films I watch. Bit by bit, writing these short reviews, became my main creative project for 2021.
The combination of being retired, and alone, plus Corona, enabled me to happily watch an average of nearly 3 films per day, and reverted me to the old days 40 years ago, when I studied Film at the University of Copenhagen under Peter Schepelern, and learned about semiotics, history & film theories.
I enjoyed this year tremendously, and intend to continue spending (βwastingβ) my time exploring old and new films alike.
Below are some statistics and a short list of a few curious finds.
I called my project β1,000 filmsβ but ended up seeing a total of 'only' 885. Out of these, 122 were documentaries, 41 Shorts and 10 were stand-ups.
I thought of myself as an an all-round cineast, versed in world cinema, interested to discover rare gems old and new. But sadly, after looking at my end-year summery, I realized that this was not the case and I am far from a completist: Only 302 were βforeign filmsβ and at least 198 (22%, and usually of my best-rated films) were films I had seen before, sometimes more than 2-3 times.
Of the βforeignβ films, 64 were French, 43 were from the UK, 40 from Denmark, 19 each were Japanese and Italian, 13 from Germany, 10 from Sweden, 9 each from Poland & Israel, 6 each from Iran, Mexico and Norway. Others were from Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Brazil, Catalonia, Chile, Holland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Korea, Lebanon, Mongolia, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Uganda, USSR and Venezuela.
Initially I was hoping to take a sizable bite out of the many films I hadn't seen before. But the field is much too vast: There are too many masterpieces in Russian, Thai, Arabic, Flemish, Mandarin, Portuguese, Swiss and what-not that I may never be able to see.
In the process, I also fell prey to βNEWSβ, the 'Never-Ending Watchlist Syndrome', and ended up with a saved list of over 400 more selections waiting to be consumed.
The year was, to my surprise, also heavily populated by newer films, with 98 from 2021, 73 from 2020, a total of 406 from the last 10 years, and only 61 from before 1960. So, not much of Film-History flair either.
Of the individual directors, I was mostly taken by Anders Thomas Jensen (10 films), Agnès Varda (6), Céline Sciamma (4), A

Her parents adored her. She had an older brother, and a baby sister came along soon after she was born. The family was close and spent a lot of time together. Things appeared picture perfect, and basically were, for quite some time.
All of this changed around the time Kara was 15. She loved the family's pet dog more than anyone or anything in this world and they were best friends. Her dog passed away. This changed her life considerably. The grief seemed overwhelming for Kara, she could not believe how much it hurt to lose her best animal friend. She fell into the a deep depression, and her parents could not pull their teenage daughter out of her misery. Kara had a hard time regulating her emotions and her parents feared something was wrong, moreso than her dog passing away.
Julia and Paul made appointments for her with a therapist and a psychiatrist, but Kara resisted the diagnoses she received and didnβt take the prescribed medication. It is said her diagnoses included bipolar disorder and/or borderline personality disorder. She fell in with some new friends at school who impressed her by doing 'dangerous' things she hadn't tried yet as a kid since she was usually focused on doing well in school and enjoying being at home. She looked up to the new friends.
Kara did not want to take the prescribed medications because they made her feel weird, but her new friends offered her drugs that they seemed to enjoy, so Kara decided to give these drugs a chance. For a short time after taking them, she would feel alive and as if the sadness had been lifted. She knew drugs were bad, but this was the first time she had felt happiness in a long time... why would she want to stop? She worked on keeping her secret from her parents but they realized quickly what was going on.
When Kara began using, it amplified her rebellious urges and tendencies toward mania. She immediately began cycling between mania and depression, and this gave her anxiety. She tried to numb herself. This fast rollercoaster of emotions can be very dangerous for an unmedicated bipolar individual, and they may not be able to stop themselves from making impulsive or irrational decisions. Kara's cycling between mania and depressive episodes could potentially have been an aspect of her disappearance.

Do your worst!
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!
Note: I've read many helpful books, watched courses designed for therapists by prominent trauma therapists, and I listened to a lot of trauma-related educational content - so any insight I have derived from being exposed to other people's work.
Recently I have come to a new theory/strategy around my healing work I thought I'd share. I have started separating my healing work into 2 types of practices. For me, journaling is essential and that's how I do most of my healing work.
