A list of puns related to "New York State Office For People With Developmental Disabilities Police"
I looked it up in the past and came across very little, so I was curious if there was a state agency or if there's any agencies anyone here works for that they might recommend. I'm originally from Maine, but I've been living in New York for quite awhile now. Interested in moving back, but sticking with the same kind of work if possible.
This eight-part podcast begins with the police shooting and expands to tell the very common story of a family trying to navigate the complex, frustrating, and sometimes dangerous world of finding adequate care for an adult with autism, as well as delving into disability rights and placing a spotlight on the people profiting off the system. It hit close to home for me, as someone who works with people with disabilities, and I think it's a world most people know very little about. I highly recommend it. Link here.

" Unclear if this is the "community" case - a man in his 40s who died at home."
Not only do the clients in group homes or clients living on their own usually sorely need furniture, nicer kitchenware, bedding, etc, but the staff bedrooms are usually furnished with whatever staff have been able to add to it over the years. I just donated my old double bed to our overnight staff room... we had 200 pound male workers sleeping in a single bed. Believe me, it's helpful that we can sleep better haha. We don't even have real curtains and the TV is a giant 20 year old tube TV. Obviously we aren't entitled to have a fancy work space or anything, and the clients always have decent stuff when possible. But, if you want to donate some nicer stuff, consider asking non-profits if they need anything for homes or clients. It's super appreciated and at least you know it's directly made a difference. If the homes don't need it, our organization will take in applications from clients for expensive stuff or jusr put in a donation area.
Anyway, thanks for listening to my random thought. Everyone is so giving this time of year so I thought I would just throw that out there. Thanks!

People with severe mental disabilities (ie. non-verbal, minimal or non-mobile, non-communicative, unable to feed/change/do basic tasks for themselves) are a huge burden on their families financially, emotionally, and often physically; caring for them can drain retirement or college funds and destroy marriages. Even if a family can afford all the expenses that come with them, other siblings will have to accept that their parentsβ attention with always be focussed on their disabled sibling, often creating huge resentment and other issues. This isnβt even mentioning quality of life - it would be hell for a person in that situation with even the smallest amount of self-awareness, trapped in a meat sack, unable to communicate or control themselves. It would far kinder to everyone involved to have euthanasia as an option available.
After talking to people irl and looking around online, this seems to be an unpopular opinion based on the ideas that love can conquer all - no it canβt, see above points.
Note: I mean this for people with very severe developmental disabilities only, not for people who, with assisted living/professional carers/etc. could live independently with a decent quality of life and is based around people born with these problems, not previously healthy adults who have acquired injuries.
Note: Not saying that anyone necessarily SHOULD do this, just that they should have the OPTION to do so.
