As the title says i was appointed to improvise over neal hefti cute in big band. But i’ve never done an improvisation. Is there any foolproof tips to help me go through this situation. :)
I picked out this song awhile ago to work through with some friends who are learning the trumpet and sax. The lead sheets I have all show it as being in the key of C, but the recording I have of it by the Count Basie Orchestra is definitely NOT in C. It sounds like they are playing it in F, which is cool.
The point I'm stuck on is that the iReal book has the chords written out like the song is in F, but states the key as C. I try playing the melody as written on the leadsheet and it doesn't fit the changes, and C major scales definitely do not work either.
So which is it, C or F or am I just stupid? Can anyone help me sort this song out?
