What's the impact of having a house on the 'National Register of Historic Homes'?

I noticed a house for sale that had this tag, and was wondering how much of a headache it would be if repair or changes were ever needed. That label to me just screams bureaucracy, design restrictions, and $$$$.

It said that it had recently undergone several updates to the kitchen, porch HVAC, etc, so those wouldn't be immediate worries, but issues can pop up at any time.
