Carlton president Luke Sayers has thrown up Nathan Buckley as a potential replacement for coach David Teague.
Sayers confirmed on Friday night that sacked Collingwood coach Buckley was person of interest for the Blues as they assess potential replacements in coming weeks.
The Blues are keen to run a full a full process despite suggestions it is Ross Lyon’s job to lose.
Teague’s camp believes Sayers and Lyon have met in person to discuss the role over recent months.
Buckley and Sayers are also strong friends and while Buckley has been out of football for several months he has an excellent record and left Collingwood with dignity and class.
The Pies eventually believed he did not have a long-term future given they needed a coach to rebuild the club for the next five years.
But Sayers confirmed Buckley was keen to bring into the selection process as a potential replacement for David Teague.
“Nathan is a terrific experienced coach,” he said. Asked if he had spoken to Buckley, he said, “I speak to Nathan quite a bit, He is a friend of mine and a terrific coach”.
He told 3AW he was keen to find a replacement for Teague as quickly as next month.
“(Greg Williams’) desire is to send out expressions of interest and try to land a coach over the next 30-45 days. I share that without having it ticked off and agreed at the board. But we want to move with some speed and try to get it done as quickly as possible.”
Coaches shy away from Blues as Lyon talks ramp up
Carlton’s desire to run a full selection process with a range of quality candidates is set to be hampered by a belief among prospective coaches that Ross Lyon will win the vacant role in coming weeks.
New Blues football director Greg Williams will spearhead a coaching subcommittee, consisting of club figures and external experts, as the Blues move quickly to hire a replacement for David Teague.
Lyon spoke to club president Luke Sayers for 45 minutes on Thursday night after the Herald Sun revealed he had been in contact with the ex-Dockers coach for several months.
Candidates including Michael Voss, Robert Harvey and Nathan Buckley could be asked to take part in a Carlton process to find a new coach.

"Sydney lawyer Nathan Buckley, who ran an unsuccessful test case against mandatory flu vaccinations in childcare this year, is now seeking to raise $1 million for a class action against the vaccine requirement for workers from eight of the Sydney hotspot local government areas introduced this week.
The legal action has attracted attention from some construction workers angry at the new requirement, which is also not supported by the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union, and several other lawyers have raised their hand to run their own actions.
Experts say the High Court would probably consider a constitutional challenge as a test of novel powers but that Mr Buckley’s argument would probably fail.
Mr Buckley is a partner at G&B Lawyers, which previously praised anti-lockdown protests as “awesome”, and has been seeking to raise $10 million to support a mandatory vaccination class action for aged care workers, who are required to get their first dose by mid-September.
He has also advised businesses on how to “get around the LGA rules” by telling them to “log in to the ASIC [Australian Securities and Investments Commission] portal and change your registered business address and principal place of business address to an LGA that is not restricted”.
In a video circulated to an 11,000-member Facebook group on Thursday, Mr Buckley said he would argue the NSW health direction is not constitutionally valid because it is a form of “civil conscription” and argued the states cannot legislate quarantine matters, which he said would include vaccinations.
“My argument is only the Commonwealth has the exclusive power under s51(ix) of the constitution to make laws with respect to quarantine, and the scope of that power is limited – it does not allow the passing of laws that allow mass vaccinations,” he said.
”No doubt in the coming days and weeks it’s not just going to be construction workers – it’s going to be hospitality workers, it’s going to be anybody that works in a pub or a club, has face-to-face day-to-day business with customers who will be compelled, coerced, manipulated into getting a COVID-19 vaccination.”
