In a cave in southern France, there are two sets of footprints. One belongs to a child, the other, alongside the first, to a creature somewhere between a dog and a wolf. These prints were left 30,000 years ago.
In our ancient past, we learned to bond with another species for mutual protection and companionship.
We often see this as a human triumph: we tamed a wild beast to suit our needs. The truth is that humans and wolves both adapted to each other. The wolves overcame their predatory instincts and found a new home in a human pack.
Humans had to change as well. Those who could overcome their fear and accept that an enemy could become a friend thrived. They gained the allegiance of creatures with sharper ears and noses, and a sense for threats that we simply don't possess.
Those wolves that couldn't adapt remained wild, creatures of instinct, driven by a simple will to survive.
But among the primitive humans, those who wouldn't accept our new allies had different reasons. They were more than mere creatures of instinct, driven by something far more sinister than survival.
The ability to sense danger that those first tame wolves possessed was a threat to the interlopers among us, inhuman creatures that wore a human form. Those beings had long worked to keep our species weak, easier prey for their own sadistic ends.
When our ancestors began to bond with wolves the interlopers tried to sabotage the new alliance, recognising the threat it posed. They sought to sow distrust, ripping out the throats of the weak and the young with their own teeth, and blaming the dogs for the slaughter.
Ultimately though, they were uncovered by their fellow tribesfolk who had learned to trust the animals they lived alongside. When tame and gentle dogs snarled and bared their fangs at only the interlopers, their true nature was clear. Those that weren't slaughtered fled into the wilderness.
But just like the wild wolves, the interlopers didn't fade from existence. As our tribes became cities and cities became nations, they saw their chance to creep back in amongst us.
They move among our teeming masses again, inflicting violence and brutality to satisfy their hunger.
We created new words for them, diagnoses and categories for their errant behaviours. We speculate on what drives them to their acts of sickening cruelty and we confine the ones we find to padded cells, never truly comprehending what they are.
It's no coincidence that many of these monsters begi
... keep reading on reddit β‘For real. I want to get into web development as a side project and bought a Udemy web development course, basically an online course with a lot of videos and lectures. I'm very excited to start it at my lunch hour and am listening to the intro lecture -- when this fucking JACKASS adds:
"Oh, and if you love dogs, you're in luck!!"
I groan instinctively, knowing what's next.
"I have the cutest dog that I feature heavily on this channel (picture of ugly muppet looking degenerate flashes on my screen) so if you are more of a cat person, just turn this video off. This course is for dog lovers."
LIKE REALLY DUDE? I spent my hard-earned fucking money on this course, YOUR COURSE, and you're telling me to bugger off because I don't fall all over your dog? Jesus H. It's like, I want to live a normal fucking life but dog nutters and their dogs make it literally impossible.
This shit MUST END.
I didn't sign up for either of those, but it would appear from recent attempts at online dating that "Doesn't have kids and doesn't want them" means I'm really up shit creek. Don't even care about the paddle, as that'll just cause splashes.
Maybe I'm just way out in left field, but aren't dogs as bad as kids? They want constant attention, they smell bad and you have to deal with their waste. I'd think childfree folks would prefer cats. They occasionally show you they love you, but for the most part they're demanding twice a day, at feeding times.
And what the hell does eating meat and cheese have to do with being childfree? I've tried this as a mental exercise, but all I can come up with is these people are childfree because they fear baby meat would just be too tempting, and they'd fall off the wagon. Preferably with sharp cheddar.
How is this a thing? I'm at a total loss here, as this is a new wrench in being back in the dating scene in my late 30s. Being childfree narrows down the options sufficiently, thank you very much ... how the hell do these expectations also come along for the ride?
and the fact that little can i help is terribly disappointing and sad
Just had this random thought about a dog that I stopped to pet once. S/O to all the good boys out there.
Hi! My roommate and I (going to be 3rd years) are looking for a third roommate! We originally were planning on getting an apartment hence why we didnβt seek out a third roommate earlier, but since that fell through weβre going to be in a deluxe triple in Sproul Cove. We both are fairly clean, and go to sleep around 1am at night. I also have an emotional support dog as well (a small daschund/collie/patterdale/lab mix) who is friendly and house trained. If anyone is interested in rooming with us please let me know!
Hey everyone. If I (36F) have "must love dogs" in my OLD profile would this be a red flag to anyone? I have two dogs, a Labradoodle and a mini Goldendoodle. Going to start back with the OLD after the new year and am just curious if that phrase would be a turn off for guys.
