Devil's Lake State Park is a popular destination for hiking, swimming, fishing, rock climbing, and other outdoor activities. Located two miles from Baraboo and about an hour north of Madison, it is the largest state park in Wisconsin.
The lake and surrounding area are sacred in Ho-Chunk culture, and myths and legends abound about the area's spirits, ghosts, lake monsters, and other supernatural occurrences.
However, some of the mystery surrounding the lake are not just the stuff of myths and legends. Nor are these mysteries benign. Some, in fact, are downright sinister.
On Oct. 14, 2020, emergency responders were called to the south side of the lake at 11:30 am. There, they found the body of 24-year-old John Schmutzer. Schmutzer had been brutally stabbed to death on a trail called the Grottos Trail.
Schmutzer was a native of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin and was a graduate of UW-Madison. At the time of his murder, he was working as an investment banker in the Milwaukee area.
Investigators believe that Schmutzer's killing was random. Police described Schmutzer as being in the "wrong place at the wrong time" and believed that he had been ambushed. No suspects have been named in his death. Police have reported a still unidentified person of interest--known as "the Running Man"--who was seen by more than a dozen people running not far from Grottos Trail around the time of the murder. The man, who was reported as being about 6 feet tall, was described as running "frantically" and "out of control." His clothing included dark colored pants with torn knees, a dark colored top, and possibly a hoodie and/or some sort of face covering. This outfit was described as inappropriate for jogging.
In March 2021, investigators released a photo of three people--two men and a woman--they stated were "potential witnesses" who they wished to speak with in relation to the murder. The photo was taken a few days after the murder by a surveillance trail cam set up to monitor visitors to the park (the cameras had been set up in the event the murderer returned to the crime scene.) One of the men and the woman were soon identified. The identified man said he had no idea that a murder had occurred shortly before his visit to the park (the woman was a companion of his). He did not know who the second man in the photo was and did not recall seeing him. The second man has yet to be identified. Authorities have stated that surveillance cameras in the park caught this man engaging in "curious"
