The eternal rivalry between the two capitals resembles the behavior of girlfriends, who try to outdo each other in beauty, intelligence, manners, and financial capacity.
The cities are separated by 714 kilometers
You can reach Moscow by plane in an hour, by speed-train Sapsan β in 4-5 hours. And, of course, you can still take a compartment or parlor in the old fashioned way, buy tea and waffles from the attendant and enjoy a night on the train.
The capital city has a population of 12 million
The city on the Neva River has 5 million inhabitants.
The time in St. Petersburg and Moscow is the same. Both cities are in the same time zone, so visitors don't have to move their clocks.
DIFFERENCES
WEATHER
Moscow: It's sunnier and almost never windy.
St. Petersburg: The rain in St. Petersburg is legendary - sometimes it rains for an entire month without a break. The sea wind from the Gulf of Finland adds to the "pleasure", twisting umbrellas and tearing away scarves and hats. The question is not about money, but people, mentality, roads and (of course) the opportunity to get a job.
Can someone explain economic difference between Moscow/Saint Petersburg and the other parts of Russia?
Not sure if this question was ever asked. I do not doubt it. But if I had a week to visit one of the two cities, which one would Russians suggest? Which city has more things to do? A better place to meet and befriend locals? Better food etc.?
We often hear that people living outside of Moscow and SPb will eventually try to move to one of those cities. But do there exist people who live in other areas and prefer to live where they currently are rather than Moscow/SPb?
