Experienced journalist Gerard Whateley believes Fremantle and Carlton’s clash should be moved to a Monday-night stand-alone game at the MCG instead of at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
The Dockers fixtured home game at Optus Stadium against the Blues was thrown into chaos this week when Perth and Peel were put into lockdown after a COVID-19 outbreak.
Fremantle wanted the game to be played in Tasmania, but this was rejected by their government and instead is now set to be in Geelong.
Whately said the game should be moved to Monday night though as to not clash with the Hawthorn versus Port Adelaide game at Marvel Stadium, which is Hawks champion Shaun Burgoyne’s 400th.
“This is a terrific game that deserves its own slot. This should be Monday night football,” Whateley told AFL360.
“And it should be at the MCG.
“The Dockers have got it in their heads that they want to disadvantage Carlton as much as possible. They’re framing this wrong now that they cannot go to Tassie.
“They’ve played three games at the MCG in three years and for the team, they aspire to be, that’s the ground for them. They can turn this scenario from displacement to national showpiece.
Whateley said if the Dockers pushed for it then the AFL would consider it.
“Go to Monday night, massive television event beamed back into Perth. It’s a game of huge interest and the ramifications around the eight will be known by then as to what exactly they’re playing for. And they get a look at the MCG.
“There’s actually a way to salvage something better than tucking the game away down at Geelong on Saturday night against a real showpiece match that the footy community wants to be together for I think.
“Let’s not clamour on top of each other while there are millions and millions of people in lockdown. Let’s spread out and see what we can get.
“It’s what the Dockers deserve because they’re growing quite brilliantly.”
