Hello guys, moved on with the albums and here I am talking about Alaska.
I already had an idea of what I would have heard in the album, more metalcore influences than prog ones, and I've got to admit that I wasn't completely excited about it and, well, it was like that unfortunately... BUT the band just kept touching the right spots when it came to those calm/ethereal moments, which I keep mentioning because I just can't get enough of all of them, and the ones present here were all able to catch me off guard and surprising me beyond any possible expectation I could have come up with. The heavy stuff, though, while still being good it wasn't as rich and fascinating as in the other albums I've listened up until now. At the end of the day, being this the first album with Dustie, Dan and Blake and knowing that the next one is none other than Colors, this is certainly a good album that paved the way to how they are now.
Going on with the tracks: we start with All Bodies which might probably be the most balanced tracks, among those that fall on the heavy side of the spectrum. It has some energetic riffs and some fun tweaks here and there which definitely stand out during the listening, but that might be rather forgettable when the song's over, like those "Aaahs" towards the end. It's enjoyable to sing along to "All bodies, contortion", it's relaxing in a way. Alaska starts incredibly well, but it then gets lost along the way, there isn't much for me that is noteworthy, and it isn't a good sign since we're talking about the title track. On the other hand, Croakies And Boatshoes is "the meme song": musically it isn't that much diverse from what heard up to this point, but it's enjoyable considering the short runtime. And those lyrics... I don't know if I'm taking them too literally, but they made me laugh pretty hard when I read them, so I guess that overall the song is cool?
Selkies: The Endless Obsession. I'm pretty sure many of you will be interested about this one track in particular and here I am stating that it's the album prime jewel. It's hard to deny what I just said, this song it's the main archetype of most of their future songs and I'm glad it is this way: you have the "proggy intro", catchy and interesting to listen, the heavy verse, something to headbang your head to and then, "the feel", "the beauty" call it how you want it you only need to know that it's more than amazing.
